i just picked up an 01 MY z06 and sold the mustang. the z06 is an awesome car. so i am new to c5 z06. i have a couple of questions:
what are the limits of the stock cats on an 01 z06? i was thinking of getting some LG long tube headers but i am confused about the cats. i want to keep them, just unsure if i need to order new cats when i get the LT headers and h pipe? i know that 2002 has a different setup. i am looking to get 420rwhp with other mods.
Congrats. Most Z06 owners came from Mustangs as well.
If you go with longtubes, the stock cats/h-pipe will be eliminated just like on a Mustang would. LG sells a matching catted x-pipe with their LTs so you can go with those. Most of the highflow cats have been proven to lose no HP over going catless/off-road.
I know of a couple Z06's making over 700rwhp with OEM cats, running turbos. They can probably make more power without them, but they will flow enough to make 800rwhp no doubt.
The '01 has 4 Cats i.e. 2 pups and two of the older two block design CATs. The '01 OEM system has 2 pounds more back pressure than the 2002- 2004 Z06, so more restrictive. That is why I swapped out the '01 for an '02 exhaust, eliminating the pups and using the newer 1 brick design CATs.
