Hi. Hope Im doing this right. I have a 2001 convert with 19000 mi on it. I just noted that both back wheels have cracks (polish aluminum stock wheels) The cracks are near where the spokes join the rim and look like scratches.
The car is long out of warranty but looking at the various forums it seem that GM had lots of problems in this area. It must be a manufacturing defect. This car has never been in competition or hit any curbs. Has anyone had any luck with GM in getting help replacing the wheels? Up here in Canada the wheels list for about $1200.00 each.
If I do bite the bullet and replace both wheels at the dealer am I going to get the same problem in another 20000mi or have GM improved the wheels?
Has anyone talked to the customer rep about this problem and received help?
If you're lucky and the planets are all in alignment (coupled with your low mileage), you might get some "customer good will" assistance from GM.
As to whether "new" OEM wheels are improved, who knows? I doubt you'd get a straight answer from GM. I know the polished thin spoke OEMs that House of Wheels sells are no longer forged, so it would seem there is a different manufacturer churning these wheels out.
If you do get the cold shoulder from GM, I certainly wouldn't pay $1200.00 for new GM wheels. Either get some used ones here, and take your chance as to future cracking, or get better aftermarkets (for less $$ to boot). Good luck, and let us know how things pan out.
Call the GM 800 cust. svc number and let them know. There are a lot of dealers who have them sitting around in the back collecting dust and you might get GM to foot the bill for those. They'll be used but better than a cracked one
Good luck, there have been a lot of posts on the topic with dealers saying no even when the C5 was still in warranty...
If they say no, look for used ones in the C5 parts section or buy some reproduction wheels from a forum vendor.

Lots of people reported the same issues, and to the best of my recollection - there was never any satisfactory outcome, even when reporting to the NHSTA was threatened.....
I''ll sell you my thin spokes for $1K each Seriously, pick up any Vette magazine and plow through the ads. There are a lot of options out there. Good luck.
I believe only the 2000 year thin spokes were forged (Alcoa) and beginning in 2001 thin spokes were made by Speedline but were no longer forged through 2004. You can get Speedlines (GM) from vendors such as Bob at HouseofWheels...

misinformation. All polished wheels were forged. During model year 2000 the supplier of the stock thinspoke painted wheels changed, with the wheels being cast rather than forged. 2001 Z06 wheels were forged; 02+ wheels were spuncast.
Seems to be a common problem with these wheels,, I was looking at getting a set, but maybe I'll shop for a different style. Let us know how it turns out.
PS,, put more info in your profile, it's always nice to see where people are
