I need new rears, my fronts are fine and have plenty of tread. I don't really like the Toyo's.
I'm thinking of putting a set of F1 GS-D3s on the rear. Aesthetically, they have the same-ish tread design. Is this is a baaaaad idea and should I just splurge for new rubber all around - am I just being a cheap bastard? Should I replace the toyo's? (they're really cheap).
This car is my spring/summer/fall daily driver.. lots of highway and city driving.
I personally prefer having the same brand tire on all 4, which is the way they were designed
Is money an issue? I would go with the Michelin PS2's, which are a little better than the GS-D3's.
Money's not really an issue, I just don't like replacing the perfectly fine fronts and on the other hand compromising by putting the Proxes back on the rear.
The front tires are worthless if I take them off... but they're worth the price of 2 new tires if I leave them on - know what I mean? :P
I guess the real question is.. given that I don't really take this thing to the track.. nor drive it to it's limits often (if at all)... is it really an issue have different brands of tires on the front and back.

Yea I feel ya. I ran into a simliar question this last weekend. I needed new tires (although I was going with the same brand), but my fronts still had plenty tread left....I went ahead and replaced all four though, just because I figured I would have to make up the cost later down the road by getting another alignment, and paying for more labor for mounting/balancing.
As to the question regarding different brands. I doubt it will make any impact at all, especially for street driving....I'm just paranoid, haha.
I recommend having the same brand/style of tire on all 4. I ran into a handling issue years ago in rain & snow with running different style tires front-to-rear on another vehicle. I always run the same tires on my vehicles (unless it is my $500 beater van).
If you don't like the Toyos, sell the fronts (on this forum or eBay) and buy a set of something else. If money is not an object, the Michelin PS2 is amazing.
I very much doubt you will be disappointed in the GS-D3's.
Most people do prefere to have all 4 the same but as you pointed out the tread looks close enough not to look stupid, I say put the fronts up for sale ad see what happens, if you sell them for a reasonable(to you) price then add the GS-D3's to the front when the Toyo's sell, till then like you said they still have meat on them why not use them.
