I tried to remove my shift **** on my 02 Z06 in order to change the boot. After removing the cap on the top, I did not see a pin that I expected. The hole in the shift **** appears to have been modified; I assume this is an aftermarket shifter (I am not the first owner). The **** will not turn and seems very securely mounted. In the hole in the shifter there is a soft metal, also cut up, that has a threaded hole. Any thoughts about how I could remove this ****?
It looks like there are still remnants of the "demon key" holding the **** securely to the lever.
If you have a set of taps/dies, you might tap some threads into the hole, insert the appropriate sized machine screw into the threads and then pry the key out with VICEGRIPS or similar.
FYI, I tried to post your image, but it's way to large when I applied the image code.

From the pic it looks like a broken key that someone tried to drill out.
That's what it looks like to me, also. Try putting a bolt in the hole. Grab the bolt with a vise grip and try to tap it up with a hammer on the vise grip.
Thanks for the advice. I had a bolt that threaded in nicely. However tapping with vicegrips and a hammer only pulled the bolt out (the metal is soft). It doesn't seem there is anything that would pull up through the ****.
The previous owner probably tried to tap the hole to pull the key out with a bolt and never got it out. At this point your only option may be to drill out the whole key. Once you drill the main core of the key out, the rest should collapse in where you can remove it.
If it were me, I would go ahead and remove the shifter so you can work on it outside the car and do whatever you need to do without damaging anything else.
Thanks for all of the advice. After screwing the bolt in a little further, it held and pulled the key out, which looks pretty obliterated. I won't need it anymore with the aftermarket shift **** I put on.
Thanks again!
