I need more back tire (can't even use 1st or 2nd), but refuse to give up my mags (running 18s f/r). Does anyone know of any place that can throw one inches in them? Looking to put at least a 305 dr out back. Maybe buy a spare wheels and use the barrel as stock?

Like I said above, they cannot weld aluminum to magnesium....the Mg will burn in the high temp and the expansion and contraction properties are different...meaning the wheel would not be safe.

The only thing special equipment needed welding magnesium is the filler rods. Most welders wont keep them on hand. Technique on the other hand could be a problem

If a donor set of magnesium wheels can be used to widen then it should be safe. The problem is there is few choices of tires when the 305 or 315 mm widths are needed for the street. It would be great to see a 305/35/18 or 315/30/18 tire.
i work for a shop and not to long ago looked up new prices for mag wheels, in 2004 there is a different part number for the magnesium wheels and the book shows the difference of them being 10.5 instead of 9.5 in the rear. i even called a gm parts dealer and he thought if its in the book thats probably what it is. might be worth looking in too.
Going to put this one to rest. Today I have talked to several of the best well modifiers in the country, only one guy said he could do it. He told me all about exactly what is involved with it and said he wouldn't touch them for an amount of money. He told me he widened a set for GM when they first came out with the wheels and it was a bad experience. Said the wheel it's self will not burn durring welding but all the chips and sparks will. He went into great detail about the process to do and said that on magnesium the weld will only hold 50% of the time and it all depended on how dense the metal cast the day they were made. This guy really new his sh@t!
