His point is that towing more than the gross weight of the towing vehicle isn't some magical boundary you can't cross.
Towing 3000 or 4000 pounds with a c5 is probably a bad idea, but its not because a c5 weighs ~3200 lbs.
That was my point. Another example would be the single axle tractor I drive weighs 14,000 pounds. I have pulled triples with it in Oregon at 105,500 pounds. That worked fine too. That's why lots of people do it. The point is if things are set up correctly it works. I would say brakes would be a must at or before 2000 pounds. I am not saying it's OK to tow with a C5 just pointing out the flaw in 1 statement on here. In my opinion the weak points would be the suspension and the trans axle and CV joints. Yes the engine and a similar transmission are offered in a truck. But the torque converter is attached to the engine not a torque tube set up. I am not saying it's not strong enough but it's not the same.
I'm in the same situation. I want to tow a small aluminum fishing boat about 12" maybe a few hundred pounds. DO I spend 3-4k for a small truck that has less hp/torque and crappier suspenion then the vette or my little daily. I think it would be more dangerous with the small truck
I tow a heavy 21.5 ft Glaston v-8 inboard 215ssv with my c5. Empty weight is 3000lbs, add trailer, fuel , cooler and gear and its north 4000lbs. Where I live I do not have parking available for more than 1 vehicle so have to work within those parameters.
While I agree that the C5 was not designed to tow, I believe that the only vehicles that are designed to tow anything these days are trucks and even THAT is debatable.
However, this is a light car and a 5.7L engine. It appears that you want to tow a small utility type enclosed trailer (i.e. for some camping gear or such). The car clearly has the engine power to do so with over 350 HP - so as for the engine and transmission - it would not appear to be much of a drag on them.
I have an LT1 engine with a 700R4 trans in my street rod and have a painted trailer to match. We use it to go to some car shows to haul the cooler, canopy, lawn chairs, BBQ equipment and such. I just can't tell it's back there. My Street rod is much heavier and has a smaller engine than the C5 corvette.
Also there was a recent thread that was published here where a company made a trailer that looks exacly like the corvette. In one picture an owner had a corvette car towing a corvette trailer.
I wouldn't guess on the limits of the towing capacities as I'm no expert.
I had a trailer custom made by CarReplicaTrailers.com I travel a lot and this makes my trips more enjoyable and really gets a lot of attention. It pulls amazingly well and doesn't have any affect on fuel milage. I can now take 3 suitcases, 2 folding chairs, and a small cooler leaving the whole back of my car for my service dog. I love my C6 and my trailer..
