Default Clutch Question...

I bought my Z in December, and noticed that it had a very short clutch (grabby if you will). It has probably, at the most, an inch of slip before it fully engages. The pedal itself moves all the way to the floor, but it disengages long before it gets there.

Is this the stock clutch, or did the previous owner install a performance one? I'm asking because I find it easier to shift when I stop the pedal right after the clutch disengages, instead of going to the floor. It seems smoother and doesn't feel as "notchy."

Also, the car had Eradispeed rotors, hawks pads, hood seal, and a shorty antenna, so I wouldn't doubt if something else is after-market. I just don't want to have to put it on a lift to find out about the clutch otherwise.

Any ideas?

Mine is stock and releases near the top of travel. You just don't have to push the clutch in very far to shift.

All the Z's ive tested driven so far have engaged near the top. Also the clutch on the Z06 is rediculously soft...

I would not be shifting without putting the clutch all the way in.........my reason for saying this is that a friend of mine wore out a Spec. stage two clutch doing this, believing that he was disenguaged, but apparently not all the way. He had the clutch for about a year and wore out the disk.

To answer your question, from what you are discribing, I would say you have an aftermarket clutch.....a stock clutch can have more slip than just 1 inch of travel.
Does it chatter at all?

u4ick -

thanks for the advice. You're probably right about the slipping. It may not be fully disengaged, but only feels as if it may be.

Yes, there is chatter, mainly when I'm not on the throttle, and also when the clutch is pressed while moving. Sitting still there is no chatter.

The chatter I refer to is when you are trying to go from a stop to moving in 1st gear.........some of the more high performance clutches will chatter under a "normal" driving condition because they are designed more for high HP and race type conditions. Also a clutch improperly installed or broke-in can create chatter.
These clutches also have a very noticable "heavy" pedal feel. If you know someone who has a Z in your area that does have a stock clutch you should ask to compare.......you will definitely know the difference.
