Is this normal?

My '01 seems to be losing a little oil (1 quart per 3000 miles)

I had a buddy follow me and I punched it through 2 gears.

He observed a good sized cloud of black smoke at hard shift each time. Something to worry about?

Is this a running rich issue? I think I read somewhere that C5's are set rich from the factory.

You can do a search, but I read here somewhere that the 01's have a common known oil consumption issue. Has something to do with the piston rings. You are not alone. Loss of oil should have nothing to do with the fuel mixture being rich or lean.

a lot of 01's burn oil, most don't burn enough to worry about it. problem with the oil control rings from the factory

blue smoke is oil, black smoke is fuel, white is antifreeze. I would bet he saw blue smoke.

In 01 the C5 had a problem with oil consumption due to the rings. This was corrected in late 01. There were recalls for the early year models. At this stage in the game it will be live with, repair, or sell. There are several treads concerning this if you do a search. I know because I did the search prior to buying my late model A4 01.
