How could he deny it!?! What a moron. At least he fessed up after thinking.

let's hope the guy doing the welding is better at his job than the one assembling the trans! Done correctly the welding shouldn't be a problem. it might be a good idea to demand an extended warranty period.

btw..... how could you accidently leave a punch inside a transmission?

I think I'd definitely get him to extend the warranty - in writing!

NO, I wouldn't go for some half-baked weld job. It'll be a weak point on that casing forever. It might also depend upon what is housed there and what kind of stresses it will experience under load.

New casing......that's the option.

I mean, I'm sorry this buffoon will be out the money but it was HIS blunder AND....here's the worst part......he should not have even muttered ANY form of excuse or denial, not one syllable. This is not even to mention what a sloppy piece of work that was to have left a tool inside.....lordy!

I know it's easy to sit here and be tough not having to look this guy in the face, but I really recommend you don't settle for a weld job, especially from ANYONE HE KNOWS.

Good luck.

I agree the guy is a moron, but who has not been one at some time or the other, I certainly have. So lets trade places with the guy, now what would you want to do. I don't see a big deal with welding this spot, its not around a bolt hole or anything else. Let the guy weld it up, get something in writing that he will make it good if it fails. I don't think there will be a problem.

Even doctors sew people up with tools left in them. S**T happens, find another shop nest time.

I would more inclined to agree if he hadn't tried to LIE about it in the first place. Leaving a tool was an accident....Lieing is intentional.

I've screwed up before on my mechanical work (majority on my own vehicles). First thought is to not 'fess up, comes natural. Next thought is to fix it before opening the mouth and getting the foot hung up in it.

Tig welding anything that has been soaked in oil is a PITA.
Get a new case.

INSIST ON A NEW CASE. WELDED CASE = NG. By the gear leveraging against the punch in the case, the case has S-T-R-E-T-C-H-E-D, and it will never be the same again. Also, the countershaft could be slightly bent.
It sounds like this guy is looking for the easy way out with you left holding the bag! In DRAG RACING when a tranny splits the case, most of the assembly goes to the scrap yard, don't ask how I know!!!! But I can tell you this, if this case is re-used, with a 90% certainty, it will blow again. Get your local MVD involved, get exactly what you should of had, a good used, but rebuilt trans that was NEVER SPLIT!

I'm sure the next guy's mechanic who's checking this car for him to purchase will love the custom welding and say buy the car. Not!

You might want to talk to the guy that "built it for you." Man I would be so pissed and sad at the same time; good luck with getting your car back on the road.

After looking over the transmission, from the inside and out, we decided that it is not in a critical location. He is going to send the tranny off to have it tig welded. He assured me that this would not affect the performance of the tranny in any way...
He is also replacing the one gear it destroyed... I am having him do a run-out on the shaft after it is back assembled.

I guess we'll see how it turns out in the end... wish me luck guys!
Man that sucks. Have him go over it good because who knows what else might have been damaged by the pieces of the gear that went for a swim.
