I recently had to put a new body control ecm in my wifes 98 Vette.
Now on on some starts, mainly after setting for a day or two(it seems) sorry I cannot be more specific I'm never around when it happens, It will give her an error message to remove Key and wait ten seconds, she does this and puts key back in and starts car and drives away. It must be in the security system but I have read the book and can find nothing that makes the issue apparent to me.
All the column lock issue have been done, or at least suppose to have been. The message is more an aggravation than a real problem. I guess I will have to take it back to the Chevy Dealer, what ever they did caused the problem. Oh, I did call them and quick answer over the phone, was a security system problem.
I just installed the column lock bypass in my '97 a couple weekends ago after my column lock decided to stay locked (that was fun) and since then I've been getting the 'pull key, wait 10 seconds' message about 50% of the time I start my car. I asked the dealership about it and if it was anti-theft related and they informed me that it's more than likely the battery starting to get weak.

Guys, this message does NOT have to be related to the column lock problem. It usually means that you need to clean the resistor pellet in your key, use alcohol.
If this doesn't work try another key. Sometimes keys go bad.
IF another key doesn't fix it, you may have problems with the ignition switch reading the key. You may need another ignition switch.

Gee don't say that, I do not need another problem, with a car that only has 20K miles on it. Anyway I have no idea what you are talking about with the keys. But I will take a look at it.
Got to mention, battery, I had a Red Top Optima die a long slow death, during the process my wife got dozens of strange error messages for 3 months or so, and finally it died, put new one in an no more error messages. When the ecm failed I first thought it was the battery, put a charger on it and it would get to max charge, and then 15 minutes later it would be down 25% or more, took it back and had them check it and it was supposedly ok. Who knows Vettes seem to have there own mind and and OS system at times.
Thought i would up date my problem solution. Finally for another reason had to take Vette to dealer for service. They worked on the key problem for two days, and finally replaced a ECM or device in the steering column. Price for the unit was about 1 Thousand dollars, however for some reason, the dealer called GM and they warrantied the device and all I had to do was pay the labor I have to give Thanks to Palm Chevrolet Service Department in Ocala Fl. for making the effort. My, wife's Vette is a almost mint 98 with only 21K miles on it maybe the miles had something to do with it. I could dig out the info on the exact part if some one needed it e-mail me if you want.

Thanks for the reply,
You will need to ascertain if Phase 3 of the recall was performed, because if it was the BCM connector was re-pinned as part of the process and you may have an issue there with the replacement module. And the PCM was reprogrammed.
If the replacement wasn't setup properly it might be causing this problem.
