what does this mean on the DIC and how does it get into that mode?

You have to hold the traction control button down for 5 seconds to turn it on. It disables traction control and leaves active handling on.

competitive driving mode is for drag racing at the track.

Once it's in that mode, you can hit reset to clear the message.
Doing so just clears the message. To deactivate it you have to hit the AH button again, or shut the car off.

A very basic question is usually answered in your owners manual. If you purchased your car used and didn't get an owners manual, you can still buy them from a number of sources.
Easier still is to go to the GMPARTSHOUSE (site supporting vendor) website and download your specific year of owners manual there...
