Ok so i got my 03 Z06 Red. now i cant sleep. I want to drive it more and more.
problem:
It is red and attracts a lot of attention and unfortunately idiots/shady people.
I have to work overnight sometimes and my office garage has had plenty of breakins/vandalism/etc. Not to mention the weekdays when the underground garage has similar incidents in the past. Local police can only do so much. And the vandals know it. I love driving my car so i dont want to not drive it because of this
Needless to say I dont want it stolen.
what i am looking for:
1. the pager that will let me know on floor 3 if someone screws around with the car in underground floor 1 or 2 i.e. -1 or -2.
2. not a standard alarm that every crook will be able to work around. something that i have cooked up (with your hlep ofcourse) which i can have an installer or a couple of buddies help me install. (i dont mind having one person know where it is... i will select who that person will be)
starter kill switch, ignition kill switch, fuel kill switch.
sensors,
and clutch and gas padlock
3. i would rather that i do the install myself or have a buddy /friend do it rather than circuitcity/cartoys etc.
what is the best alarm system to get i.e. commercially available system like viper/clifford etc?
what are some required features in such system?
how do i alter such systems so as to make it unique and thus problematic/absolutely frustrating to breakin.
Lets leave out the car thief with a flatbed for now.
lastly a few easy ways to deter theives.
budget: 500$ max
labor: plenty of friends (gearhead friends, trusted)
The first thing I would do is to write your representatives. It's ridiculous that you can be arrested 10+ times in this state for auto theft before you actually serve any jail time.
Beyond that, the best thing I can recommend is just to have good insurance. If someone wants to take your car, they're going to do it, or they're going to vandalize it trying.
The Corvette anti-theft system is pretty darn good .... you cannot just "hotwire" your way around it. For example, the PCM expects a "password" from the BCM (the BCM controls the cars alarm system) on engine start. If the password isn't supplied, the engine will crank but no fuel is supplied to it. Everytime the engine starts properly, the PCM and BCM "handshake" on a new password for the next start. This prevents a thief substituting in a "rigged" BCM as the rigged BCM cannot know the correct password.
If a sophisticated thief wants your car (not a "kid" playing around) they will take it, regardless of alarms, cutoffs, etc.
Vandalism is also difficult to stop .... spray painting graffiti on a car is unlikely to set off even the most sophisticated alsrms.
I'd talk to your employer about installin security cameras for at least part of the garage (if they won't do the whole thing) for what I assume is a smaller nightshift crew. Then post signs that cameras are in use ... that is probably about the best deterrent you can hope for.
They stole mine on a sunny weekday right from my driveway, within a 1 hour span. I dont know how they did it, but id look into a 24/7 gps tracking system. If the car is not started with their key or moved, even on a tow truck. You will be notified and also the police....
But in the end if they really want your car, they will it take it even if you are in it
To avoid my car from being driven away by someone eles other than myself, I made up a correct lenthh of heavy chain & covered it w/ a bicycle inner tube. Run the chain through the rear spoke of wheel and through the rear A arm and where the chain meets to the rear of the tire I lock it w/ a H/D padlocklock. The paddlock I use is round in shape and with this style there is no place to use bolt cutters . Potential thieves will have to torch the chain or flat bed the stolen car. I know I'm ****, but I keep a small blanket in the trunk so when I lay on my side to do my "lock up" & hopefully "unlock I don't get dirty. Works for me. Good luck. Bob.

Here in Cali, the "smart" thieves tow the car a short distance, then load it into a shipping container on a truck. This does two things ...
The heavy metal container blocks GPS signals ... the car cannot send position data if it is equipped with a GPS alarm ... and dramatically reduces the outbound signal strength of any radio alarm signal.
Hides the vehicle .... they can drive anywhere they want and the car is "invisible".
If they want it ... they'll get it ... but usually they are only interested in VERY high end vehicles with that kind of expensive "operation".

what would stop the would-be thief from lifting the rear end up & towing on the front wheels? Also, liquid nitrogen and a small sledge hammer can break any lock.
Just a lil FYI, our cars do have pretty good "anti theft systems" built in already..C5's have what is called "VATS" system this is a module that reads the resistance of the chip in our keys..If the VATS decoder module does not measure the proper resistance when the vehicle
is started, the starter and or fuel pump may be disabled for up to 10 minutes..now there are only 15 different values that are out there but in order to acually start the car that is what would have to be figured out first and then bypassed with a relay..but in order to know the resistance you would need the key..if you know what your doing it can be done.but takes some know how..i would still do an alarm..but nothing stops a toe truck from taking your baby..
