Default CAGS shift yay or nay

I just bought my C5 I have been doing some reading and still do not understand the entire point of the 1-4 Shift. I have the shift eliminator, just not sure If I need to install it. True it is pretty annoying when I get that light, if its saving me gas is there a reason to take it off? will I lose gas or just have to use the self control to shift to 4th without a blinking light telling me to?

You'll still get the light. The CAGS doesn't change that. It simply allows you to decide which gear to use. Personally, I don't like my car telling me what to do. I'm kind of a control freak so I want to tell the car what to do. My C5 gets better mileage than anything else I own so I don't worry about it too much. Yesterday I paid $3.539/gal for gas so that may change one day but it hasn't yet. YMMV.

Best thing I've done to my vette was to install the bypass.

The first few weeks I had my car, it was kind of annoying. I don't know even know it's there now. I haven't installed the bypass and it's not even an issue. I never shift to 4th, I just drive normal.

The purists will tell you to drive it the way it's meant to be driven, blah blah blah.
That's a foolish argument.
There are plenty of low speed applications where the eliminator comes in handy.
I vote for an immediate install.

I installed one in my C4 and my C5 and don't regret it at all. Because shifting sometimes is routine and you don't think about it, the blasted 1-4 shift comes into play when you don't expect it and you miss the shift to second, very annoying. All the bypass does is fool the computer, it is an easy install, especially on the C5, and is worth the effort. Just remember to purchase the one for the C5. Do it.

My Vette is a 2002 that I have had since June of 2002. With just over 24000 miles on it, I bet I could count on one hand that number of times the car has forced me to shift into 4th gear. I bought the bypass, but never installed it. However, when I start off from a light, I usually wind the gears out a little farther than I probably should.

However, it is pretty annoying and somewhat startling when you are doing a slow cruz with the wife and you think your going to second but it suddenly pushes you to fourth.

My .02 is if I weren't so lazy I would install it.

That being said, my understanding of it's usefulness as a gas savings measure is merely a technicality to stay within (or outside of) the Feds gas guzzler guidelines. The mileage is so good compared to all my other cars, I wouldn't even think about it be a fuel savings device.

I love my Vette!

The first thing I did, was install a CAGS elininator when I bought my 2004 six speed coupe. I bought a six speed car to shift when I wanted to, not when it wanted me to.

Install it and then drive the way that you want to. If you want to go 1-4, you still can. I hated the 1-4 shift.

I found the 1-4 skip shift annoying. The eliminator was a very easy modification, that made a huge difference.

I dont drive my car like a Grandpa so I thought I already had one installed. One day I decided to drive like a Grandpa and yep, it does the 1 to 4 shift.

Moral of the story.... If you are light on the gas you will see the light.

Oh and for the control thing.... There are several things on the car that control what you are doing and keep you from doing them, one is Active Handling and we all know this is very useful at times.

Try driving one of the first cars made if you like to be in control, this way you will have to adjust the timing, fuel, air mixture and everything else when you are driving:')

This is a must for all of us who drive through our neighborhood subdivisions at 25mph in 3rd or 4th gear. I am not sorry it is installed.

How exactly does it save on gas anyway? I find when I'm not paying attention and it goes 1 to 4 that I end up having to give it more gas than I would have if I'd gone into 2nd.

It keeps the RPM's down and that is what saves gas.

I undestand the CAGS eliminator can be anywhere's from 20 to 40 dollars depending where you get it. Here is another possibility......

Find a reputable tuner either in the area or mail order, that offers a $99.95 tune. You will kill 2 stones with 1 bird

You will get a safe tweak in your performance, which you will definitely feel, and get the CAGS (without the annoying light) at the same time, for only about $65 more.

Just a thought

INSTALL THE CAGS...Traffic sometimes dictates the 1 to 4 shift set by the factory, but it can change quickly have someone on your butt. It's dangerous... Install the cags...You decide how to shift the car...
