I'm going back to CA to see my vette on Thursday and the first thing on my list is to get an alignment done.
I also want to look into lowering the car just a hair (on stock bolts) but I can't do this until I get back home to AK with the car, so that I can see how much clearance I'll have with it and my driveway.
If I get the alignment first, then lower the car a little, will things be screwed up? Should I put the alignment off until I get the car up here to AK and then make my decision on whether I can lower it a bit?

Wait till you lower the car before getting an alignment.
I understand getting car aligned after you lower it, but why should it need after just changing tires?
I've always figured that by the time you need new tires (20k miles, lets say), enough time and miles have passed that the last alignment may have degraded. So, as a matter of convenience it's a good idea to pair up alignment with tires. You're already at the shop anyway.
If your old tires were wearing evenly, there is no reason to align the car. Sometimes if it isn't broke it's best not to try and fix it..
I got a 4 wheel alignment on my C-4 some years ago, they screwed up the rear alignment, I had to ask them to align it the second time to get it right. You could tell it wasn't aligned correctly just by looking at the rear wheels.
well the dealership drove it after replacing the tires. They said there was no need for the alignment. It does drive very straight. Would anyone have it done anyway? It has been years maybe longer since the last alignment.

the key is TIRE WEAR. if the old set wore out evenly, there is no need for an alignment. does not matter how long it has been since the last alignment. If it drives straight and doesn't scrub the tires, its fine.

I had my car done by Phoenix Performance here in Pa. They told me that even new Corvette's are sometimes out spec from the factory. They weighed me and placed that weight in the drivers seat, and set the proper hight and rake and then the 4 wheel alignment. I took just about 1 1/2 hours start to finish to do the job and it was only $95.'s. I couldn't believe how much better the car tracked. Did I need an alignment with only 18k and good tire wear?? May be not, but to know that the cars alignment was 100% correct gave me peace of mind after spending $1800. on new tires.

Firestone has a nice lifetime alignment deal they sell for like $150-160. So, if you plan on keeping your car for a while, it might be worth your while.
