Default Blackwing install

Hey all, just received a blackwing intake for my '98 vert and I'm ready to install. Are the included instructions adequate or does anyone have any experience \ tips \ tricks that I need to know....A detailed post with pics would be awesome

Why does the battery negative need to be disconnected (as per included instructions) ??

Thanks , Mark

Did mine several years ago following the instructions. Pretty simple.

I don't recall the battery cable removal though.

I didn't bother disconnecting the negative side of the battery. I suspect it's strictly for safety issues. It certainly wouldn't hurt anything to do it, though.

The only problem I had was getting it to snap on to the two tabs. I had to apply a lot of force. Also, I had to cut a small hole in it for the manifold sensor (I think that's what it is called). You'll notice this small line when you remove your original breather. I put mine on about 6 years ago, so my memory may be a bit sketchy.

Good luck with the mod and hopefully others will chime in.

Don't worry about unhooking the battery and use these to links as reference - if you do, install will go smoothly:

I am no grease monkey, and this took me 20 minutes.

PM me if you run into difficulties.

Good luck

You do have to disconnect the MAF and maybe IAT (?) wires during the installation. It's usually recommended to disconnect the battery with R&R of any wiring. Since this is apparently your first attempt at C5/Z06 DIY, it wouldn't hurt.
It's your car to do with as you please.
The hardest part will be getting the rubber grommets off the posts mounted to the horizontal front cross member behind the bumper. They look just like the grommets/posts on the radiator cover on either side of the oem air bridge.
You should be able to get your arms (or girlfriends/wifes) down between the front bumper and the hood and wiggle the oem air intake off.
The BLACKWING will also mount with rubber grommets...lubricate them with something slippery that will last a while, making future R&R much easier.
I prefer to use a light coating of white lithium. ARMORALL, WINDEX or spit will work just as well, but they'll dry out quickly.

When I installed mine I was told to undo the battery so the system can start a re-learn process over again. It takes about sixty miles, it has to do with the mass air sensor. I did this on both of ours and didn't have any code throwing problems. David

Hey, if Mrs. Patches can do it, so can you. Included instructions are fine - and you can always PM Mrs. Patches if you get stuck.

I have a 2001 and I had to trim the coupler with a razor blade knife. But other than that, it went fairly easy........

I never disconnected my battery and noticed the SOTP within the first few miles. I really liked this simply mod. One of the best bang for the buck.
