Default New guy with a question

Hey guys my name is Al and I have been looking at C5's now for a couple of years and have decided that that is what I want. I found a 2003 black on black, 6speed with only 13.8k miles on it. It has HUD, mag. ride control, 12 disc changer the works. It is fully loaded.

My question is when you turn the car off it makes a pretty loud rattle sound. Now this doesn't happen when the clutch is pushed in. Is this normal?

Thanks for the advice.

Al

Oh, if anyone is curious I will be trading in my 2004 gto.

Pefectly normal.

The marbles-in-a-can or "gear rattle" in neutral with the clutch released is caused by the mainshaft in the transmission rotating with no load upon it. Because the trans is rearward, when you release the clutch (even in neutral) the drive shaft and trans mainshaft are turning (free wheeling). When you press in the clutch, the drive shaft and trans mainshaft stop rotating, stopping the noise. The manual trans uses ATF that, when hot, is thinner than water and has poor noise dampening quality compared to gear oil.

You may also hear a "clank" noise when releasing the clutch rapidly in neutral. This is simply caused by the clutch engaging the stationary drive shaft.

When turning the engine off with the clutch engaged, you'll hear the rattling as the drivetrain winds down also.
