Default Another piston ring question...

Sorry if this a tired post but what, if anything, can I do about oil consumption on my Z? Was there a recall and can I still take advantage of it?

i think the factory is not doing anymore fixes. My vette shop says they fixed the oil consumption problem by gooing to a heavier weighted oil. mobil 1 goes upto 15w-50. you may try it. my 01 Z doesnt really consume enough to worry about but i am going to try 10w40 next time, but i live in the Houston area and we really dont have the cold weather that justifies the thin oil.

Default '97-'01 LSx oil consumption issue............

GM is not honoring that fix seven to eleven years ago. The cars have gone thru many hands , andI have to believe that either the original owners had the issue addressed or secondowner if there was a bad problem.

But you can have the ring installed at your cost.
You can take the aluminum intake valley cover off and see if the baffles are sealed.

You can drive like the car was a Honda ( if it is the ring that is the cause , high rpm w/ lite load and /or aggressive driving increases the consumption.)

You can add a ( one or more ) oil catch cans to the PVC and a valve cover to evacuate the blow bye thru the can and not the intake, combustion area and CATs, ect.

Some say you can get creative with PVC valves ( smaller orifice)

And you can indeed use a higher viscosity oil.

You can do all or a combination . Aren't choices fun.

How much oil does the engine goe thru between 3000mile changes?

It goes through about a quart. Is that a lot, not a lot, or about average for this problem? I think it's alot but I'm not completely sure. Can someone send me a diagram or pics of catch can installation/placement? Also, where to find a quality catch can? Thanks for all the great info so far!

I just found another post about this subject and it seems that my car isn't really burning that much oil after all. Am I to assume that going through one quart every 3k miles or so is "normal" consumption for an LS6? If so, I can live with it knowing I'm among most Z's on the road. Just want to be sure whether or not to address this situation.

A quart of oil every 3000 miles is normal.

Default oil consumption at any rate.............

2kvert; oil consumption at any rate is detrimental to engine performance and longevity i.e. see my post #14http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show....php?t=1970761
Before making any decision about a oil catch can /tank please read this great reference from Dave68 PVC Line Oil Removal 101:http://www.conceptualpolymer.com/corvette_c5_corner.htm Then there are the forum vendors who seem to sell many to our members:http://www.eliteengineeringusa.com/Catch_Can.html and http://www.eliteengineeringusa.com/Catch_Can.html and http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show....php?t=1928584 and http://www.revxtreme.com/specials.htm Then read the fourms comments:http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show...ghlight=dave68
Bye the way , don't even look at cans that have no baffling or condensating material i.e. many of those on Ebay that are just welded cans that are just hollow cans .
A for me , I've made my thoughts know and have choosen a design similiar to Dave68's but use a modified Binks production set of filters : water-oil/ separator filter 86-605 and coalescing filter 86-617 w/ modified Class 3 micro glass fiber filter. Both filter bodies are aluminum w/ sight glasses
to monitor contaminate levels.
Effectiveness, design and location , then cost are the areas of concern. The effectiveness of the oil catch can is quite important in overall longevity and performance so give it some thought. hope this helps with your decision.

A quart in 3k miles is absolutely fine. You are driving an all aluminum RACE engine, for all practical intents and purposes ... it is gonna use some oil between changes.
