Wouldn't happen if you drove a manual!

(I have nothing constructive to add)

Here's another avenue that I discovered on a Daewoo.

With most auto shifts these days, you have to depress the brake pedal in order to pull the shift lever out of park.

This is triggered by the brake light switch being activated.

You might check the switch for intermittent failure. Have someone look at your brake lights while depressing the brake several times.

And no, the Daewoo wasn't mine!!
But once again, the so called Mechanics these folks knew were suggesting all kinds of other expensive fixes.

Default Happening to another 98 vette

I am having the same issue here too. I cant get the car out of park. I had it towed to the dealer.

Once there they were able to get into gear right away. They said they lubed it and checked the cables etc. I drove it home a few days later. went to go to to work the next day and it was hard getting it into gear. let it sit for the weekend and it wont budge. Any suggestions or thoughts?

Help please

More commonly referred to as "torque lock"...My '95 Chevy pickup is bad about this. Park it on a hill, put it in park, let it settle to a resting position. Come back, crank up the truck, try to pull it out of park into reverse or whatever, BAM...

Your problem is probably the switch as mentioned above. I would check that before I blamed it on something mechanical. I had an Olds Alero that did the same thing. Sometimes if I wiggled the steering wheel back and forth while pressing the brake pedal it would allow me to press the little switch on the side of the gear selector so I could put it in gear. It is frustrating, I know what you are talking about. I'm not sure where to tell you to look to check the electrical side of it, maybe someone else can chime in. I'm part of the manual crowd Good luck

I found out that mine was the center button in the **** was not depressing the release in the shifter enough not allowing the lever to move out of park. I replaced the **** with the after market conversion kit that allows any or standard shift **** to be used eliminating the center button. I believe I paid $55.00 for the adapter kit. Basically did away with the center button. I don’t know if this will help your problem it did mine.
