Default General Supercharger Question

Hi guys, quick question

Im looking at Buying a z possibly with a supercharger on it. Is there a difference in preformance between a top mount (like a maggie) or a front mount (like a procharger). The only difference that i can see is that you need a different hood with a top mount. What about price, preformance, reliability, ect. Thanks

Maggies make better torque and Prochargers make better horsepower.

If you goto the FI/Nitroous section and do a search about roots vs.centrifgual you should find the info your looing for.

This is good advice. I'm not an expert on this (and anyone please feel free to correct me), but I believe a roots will give you better acceleration in the lower RPM's whereas Centrifugal will give you better acceleration in the Higher RPM's.

The two systems are night and day. The screw type chargers come in single screw which basically turn and channel/pump air into the intake. The twin screws not only channel but compress so you get more air and more power. These chargers tend to give you lots of torque low down which is great for instant response, showboating and smoking the tires but not good for mpg, greater stress on the drivetrain and tire wear.

I have a Vortech on my Mustang and it's a centrifugal type. Although it's a pump like any other charger, it's one which "builds" as the impeller spins like a fan. It drives like a turbo in many respects. Down in the rev range, the car remains pretty much near stock but the power delivery is far more linear and then comes in like a steam train and takes off like a scalded cat but you do have to spin it up which means you have to be in the right gear, you can't afford to be lazy with the gears. That's not to say it's ever slow because it isn't but they thrive on being worked. They are more efficient and take less power to drive so better mpg, driven gently it's as good as stock on gas and when you cut it loose, it's a redline blur. It seems that because the driveline builds up the power, there is less stress placed on the driveline.

I should stress that I've not tried a screw type charger so can't offer first hand experience.
