Wheel Tech
Now that I've taken on a C5 Z06 project I'm looking at options and defining performance envelopes. I'm currently looking at wheel options and came to the realization that anything short of a 1 piece forged/billet wheel may not withstand the forces applied by a chassis capable of 1G skid pad performance. If anyone has some background info to share on C5 wheel requirements I'm all ears!
I wouldn't worry about wheel strength too much. The main diff is forged vs cast wheels really only matters in a wreck situation ie hitting a curb or whatever hard enough will bend a forged wheel vs shatter a cast wheel. The stock Speedline wheels on the 02-04 z06 are spun cast in italy by Speedline. The spin casting process generates aluminum wheels with similar strength to forged wheels with the lighter weight of cast wheels. Considering stock z06's have pulled over 1g in tests the stock wheels should be more than enough. I know several autocross drivers with z06 that have run 315mm Hoosier A6 slicks on the stock z06 rims and I guarantee they pull close to 1.2g around corners from first hand experience.
I personally run stock z06 18"x10" speedlines front and rear with 315mm Azenis 200 treadwear and they are great. Super lightweight wheels. There are slightly lighter 3pc wheels available but 3k vs 600 for mine I choose the cheaper route.

I've caused stress cracks on stock 60's steel wheels running radials. Wasn't sure it could be a similar issue on high performance chassis with certain types of wheels. Thanks for the input. I'll probably be running a vintage style 17" 2 piece alloy on my project...
CCW's 3-piece Classic wheels are the same whether they are the street versions or the race wheels. The only difference is the bolts holding them together. The street wheels use polished stainless bolts. Most Speedvision GT cars ran the Classics.
