Default Failed emissions inspect- bs!!!!

My 02 just failed the emissions inspection.....why you ask??????

Because the battery died. yup, great reason.

the charger cable fell off at some point in February so I rehooked it back up, didn't think anything of it. So it starts right up the other day, drive it to the dealer to get the oil changed, inspection, brakes, and they tell me it failed the emissions inspection because "there were codes in there"
I picked the car up and was told I had to drive it for 100 miles before it could be re-checked. Well I pulled the codes- all due to the battery dying!
What BS!!!

A dead battery causes the PCM to reset the Federal EPA mandated pollution control tests to a status of NOT RUN. These tests are part of the OBD2 standard. It takes about 100 miles of driving to get the PCM to run and complete all the pollution control tests.

Some states (like California) require a car to have passed these internal tests as part of the smog check. Other states don't. Sounds like NY is like CA .....

The price we pay for living in areas like CA and NY (along with having Senators like Boxer, Feinstein, Clinton and Schumer .....) ..... hang in there .... I keep believing it can't get worse than this ......

Before the winters sleep I disconnected the battery to install an absorptive mat. Then I got notified I was due for the test (here you can't renew your plates without passing). Then I found out about the computer having to relearn. I drove the car 3 or 4 times before the test and passed. Better luck next time.

Illinois like NY complies with California EPA OBII emission requirements

yup, just something we have come to learn here that the car needs a certain amount of cycles before the emissions part is ready. It gets reset whenever battery is disconnected or when codes are cleared if you have had codes before

Same thing just happened to me at NJ Motor Vehicle inspection station. Apparently, the computer can be reset with the right OBDII computer system, but you still have to drive it for a while for the internal diagnostics to perform their tests. I'm sure we are all dumping way more pollutants into the air driving the car 100 miles before a retest than the tests are intended to save. Total BS IMHO.

It happened to me last year when I threw a lean code driving to the dealer...Yea just my luck.... I had to reset the code then I failed the inspection. I got the lean issue corrected at LG's that afternoon.

Anyway... A forum member showed me this GM driving cycle. I did it exactly and passed the inspection the next day I went to the dealer.

Might want to save it for a rainy day....

General Motors' OBD-II driving cycle

• Cold Start. In order to be classified as a cold start, the engine coolant temperature must be below 50°C (122°F) and within 6°C (11°F) of the ambient air temperature at start-up. Do not leave the key on prior to the cold start or the heated oxygen sensor diagnostic may not run.

• Idle. The engine must be run for two and a half minutes with the air conditioner on and rear defroster on. The more electrical load you can apply the better. This will test the O2 heater, Passive Air, Purge "No Flow", Misfire and if closed loop is achieved, Fuel Trim.

• Accelerate. Turn off the air conditioner and all the other loads and apply half throttle until 88km/hr (55mph) is reached. During this time the Misfire, Fuel Trim, and Purge Flow diagnostics will be performed.

• Hold Steady Speed. Hold a steady speed of 88km/hr (55mph) for 3 minutes. During this time the O2 response, air Intrusive, EGR, Purge, Misfire, and Fuel Trim diagnostics will be performed.

• Decelerate. Let off the accelerator pedal. Do not shift or touch the brake or clutch. It is important to let the vehicle coast along gradually slowing down to 32km/hr (20 mph). During this time the EGR, Purge and Fuel Trim diagnostics will be performed.

• Accelerate. Accelerate at 3/4 throttle until 88-96 km/hr (55-60mph). This will perform the same diagnostics as in step 3.

• Hold Steady Speed. Hold a steady speed of 88km/hr (55mph) for five minutes. During this time, in addition to the diagnostics performed in step 4, the catalyst monitor diagnostics will be performed. If the catalyst is marginal or the battery has been disconnected, it may take 5 complete driving cycles to determine the state of the catalyst.

• Decelerate. This will perform the same diagnostics as in step 5. Again, don't press the clutch or brakes or shift gears.
