Just thought I'd give a tip to those of you who are interested in removing your Body Side Molding. (Even though it may seem obvious.)
Instead of removing all of the BSM's at once, start with just one of the 4 pieces and remove the adhesive underneath to inspect the surface. (The segment in front of the door is the suggested piece to remove.)
If your car was repainted or suffered UV damage, it'll be obvious after you remove that piece of molding but there's a small chance that your paint may be discolored in the area under the adhesive.
Of course if this is the case, it's much easier to re-attach that small segment than it is to remove the adhesive on all of your BSM's and re-glue them back to your car.
The chances are very small but it happened to me. I removed all of my BSM's at once and only after I removed the adhesive did I notice the discoloration. I tried claying it and polishing it but it made no difference. I'll be taking it to a professional later this week but it looks like it'll require some wet sanding to remove. If that's the case, I may consider reattaching the BSM's.
It looks simple doesn't it? I tried claying and polishing but it didn't come off. I was tempted to try some rubbing compound until a friend of mine warned me not to try it unless I knew what I was doing. He also sent me a pic of what could happen if I screwed up.
Thanks for the suggestions. The car only has 26,000 miles so I was surprised to find these marks.
It definitely isn't any adhesive since there's no discernible edge or boundary layer via touch. I've used Goo Gone along with some 3M Adhesive remover and it made no difference.
I talked to a local member of another forum who's recognized as the detailing guru and he's offered to look at my car later this week using a paint microscope. (Who knew there was such a thing.) He also offered to try a couple of things using his orbital.
Unless your car has been painted, those marks will come out with a fine compound and a buffer. Just make sure you find someone who knows what they are doing and uses foam pads.
My car looked the same way before I used the buffer on it.....
So I started removing my BSM, and it looks like at least the one fender I started on was repainted at some point with the molding still on there. Glad I started with just this piece!
