Default Future Z owner...

Hey folks! I have been a lurker here for about 2 years now. I am working on getting a house ready to sell, then its time for me to find my Z. I REALLY like the 02-04 with the better horsepower numbers, but its not always about that is it? What are the pros and cons of getting an 01 versus an 02-04? I know that there was ring flutter/oil burning issues with the 01's, and of course the power difference, but is the 01 a bad idea? I would just fall right into the "mod fever", but want a good base to start on. This car would be my daily driver. Thanks to all!

Hi VTLVR,
The 02 moves to different wheels; more HP; Heads Up Display; different shocks; different clutch; lighter trans case....It's generally accepted that GM got better with the car as time rolled on. That said: the 01Z is an excellent car. A lot of the problems with the Vette have been solved by original or subsequent owners and all of them are discussed here. A LOT.. And you can happily mod any of them to whatever power level you can afford... Some excellent reading can be had in the "Stickys" listed above...Gen Z06 did a lot of typing....The best,
Tom C.

OPPS: That's where rbartick sent you..great minds run along the same lines..

If you go 5-6 pages back on this forum, I guarantee you will find someone asking this question on every thread.

In my opinion, an 01 is not worth it unless you get a good deal. Not only that but I do like the HUD as I do use it every now and then.

If it was up to me, I would get the newest one possible. They are all pretty much the same but every year had something better at the same time.

I use the HUD all the time - usually pay more attention to it than the regular speedometer. Sure wouldn't want to go back to a non-HUD car.

Buy the best car you can within your budget. There are NO BAD Z06's.
IF you spend $30,000 for a hi mileage 01 thats a bad deal.If you spend $40,000 for a low mileage 02, thats a bad deal...If your budget allows $30k to $35 K then you are in the 03,04 range anyway. It would be best to have a $$$ budget mentioned in these threads.

IF the question is, I have enough cash to buy any C5 Z06 , what should I get? I would say get an 04. If the question is I really don't want to spend more than 23k to 24 K then start your search for an 01.

Do not discount the 01's, they are great cars and you will never notice the 20 HP under 120 mph anyway. It will still run you off the road in 2nd gear if you are not paying attention.

I picked up a " high " 66K miles 01 model back in 06 for 21.5 k. Car gets almost 30 mpg on the highway and insurance costs almost 400 a year less than the 03 Mustang mach 1 I had before it. I drove an 03 and the 01 and on the street could tell no difference in the cars at all. The car rolled over 82k miles today with no issues. It is just a good reliable car.
