Default Stock air intake ?

Quick question. I keep getting a lot of negative comments about still having the stock air intake system on my 02 Z06. Is it really that bad ? Is the one I have listed below any better than stock ?

This is a nice choice. Opinions will vary.

Don't worry about what everyone else says. Yes, it is better to have an after-market one like a Vararam, Blackwing, etc. but its not like the factory one is terrible or something. If you have a little money to spend then an after-market intake is a great choice for a first mod

My 2002 had a Vararam on it when I bought it. I thought it looked cheap, the filter element was so thin you could read through it, and the seal between the housing and the filter had air gaps around it. In short, I did not like it. I found a stock setup and replaced the Vararam. I can't tell any difference in seat-of-the-pants feel.

My conclusion is that there is nothing at all wrong with the stock setup.

You are right some of the older style filters that Vararam gave out with their intakes were pretty thin, but they have K&N replacements for them now that are really good.

Hey Gunny - Semper Fi!

You could just go the "bubba" route with the zip-tie mod. Pull the factory cover off and use two long zipper-cuffs, one on each side to keep the filter in place. Some claim "seat of the pants" results. I've maintained the factory set-up my Dress Blues Car but with a K&N Filter.

I second the "don't worry about what everyone else says". You'll never get a consensus on what's the best choice (of anything), anyway.
I initially had everyone's favorite, the "Blackwing" on my car, but got intermittent codes. Instead of getting an expensive dyno tune for $500, I chose to return to oem...well slightly modified oem.
Yes, I know my intake is now 110V powered...

I would rethink the choice you are looking at. They sell something that looks quite similar on eBay for a low price but the problem with that style is they actually rob power according to dyno tests. They create a lot of turbulence and what you want is a smooth flow of air. The stock setup is not bad but it was designed with fuel economy and emission standards in mind. The blackwing listed here http://www.mamotorworks.com/corvette-2-135-38.html
or the K&N system is a good setup. Vararam is good also. The Callaway Honker is suppose to be great. Not sure, have never tried it.
If you go cold air intake get a good air bridge to go with it. Then you will need exhaust to match. More air in needs a place to go out. Do it step by step and its not bad. In short, CAI do make an improvement in performance.
