What are the TRUE NUMBERS on a gear swap. I have an A4 with a 3.15 right now. How high would I have to go to FEEL the difference and has anybody here actually seen the number difference in 0-60 times.
Gears are usually one of the most obvious "seat of the pants" mods. Although I dont have any actual numbers pretty much any gear change you WILL feel a difference. Keep in mind the higher gears you go the higher your RPM's will be during say highway cruising for example. I would think the most common upgrades for an automatic would be going to a 3.42 or 3.73. That along with a set of drag radials you will pull some VERY quick launches and 0-60 times.
After driving with 3.15 gears for about a year, one of my winter mods was to have 3.42's installed, and did the first part of December. Then the snow started to fall and I have only recently "brought her out of hibernation". Reprogrammed with my Predator, and could not believe the difference. Before with T/C on, it would feel sluggish out of the hole. With off, would squeek the tires. Now, even with T/C on, traction, (of course it is still cold out) is an issue. With it off the 1-2 shift and even the 2-3 requires major attention. I would have to say best money I spent! Cost? Whole new "pumpkin" was $1050, and install was by a friend at a dealership, "afterhours" for $250. Not a single regret. Feels like a Vette should. Hopefull will get some numbers soon.

I went from 2.73's to 3.42's along with a tune on an A4 and it's a night and day difference . I'm Stock except for Blackwing and Corsa Pace Cars and after the tune I pulled 329 RWHP and 343 Torque.
This mod has resulted in another needed mod. I now have the rocking seat problem that's going to need repair!
I just had 3.73s installed and am in the process of a 500 mile break-in period. If it would ever stop snowing up here, I'd get that done and start playing. Can't wait!

My engine is stock and it will spin the tires from 0 to 60 and start again after the shift. PM me if you get them and want some real nice shift patterns I have developed.
In the price quotes, nobody seems to be including the reprogram of the shift patterns.
Down side I guess is lower mileage - more like 24-26 highway - and if you have a loud exhaust or headers - that noise increases with the higher rpms.

Would I do it again - I can not do with out it.
I don't have any numbers but I went from 3:15 gears to 3:42 gears and you can definitely feel a difference. I got a great deal on a set of very low miles ring and pinion on ebay (about $60 shipped) and had them installed and PCM reprogrammed by a forum member for $465. I just had it done 2 weeks ago so I haven't driven it much but it is easily the best performance mod I've done. I do a lot of highway driving, for this reason I didn't go with a 3:73 or 3:90. For me I think it's the best ratio for engine I have and the type of driving I do.
