The auto lock feature on the DIC programs the car to lock the car when you put it into gear. The Corvette is one of the few GM cars where you can program this feature off.
Here is the description from the Owners Manual:
Auto Lock
Press the OPTIONS button until AUTO LOCK appears on the display, then use the RESET button to page through the following choices:
AUTO LOCK ON
AUTO LOCK OFF
If you choose AUTO LOCK ON, both doors will automatically lock when the vehicle exceeds 10 mph (16 km/h) in a manual transmission. In a vehicle with an automatic transmission, both doors will automatically lock when you move the shift lever out of PARK (P).

Some C5s do not have auto-lock/unlock. On my '99 FRC it is not in the BCM options program. I have read and read both the OM and the shop manual on this and nowhere do either of them say "if equipped". They only give instructions as what it is and how to program it with the DIC.
I checked into this very early on after I bought the car and confirmed the fact that my car does not have the feature. Apparently it must have been a cost cutting item on GM's list in an effort to keep FRC prices lower and is probably unique to them.
Thanks - I guess the manual is helpful from time to time
I thought it meant that the car locked automatically when you walked away and then unlocked when you walked back up to the car.
You may be thinking of the passive feature on the 98-99 models that could be turned on on the key fob. The doors locked when you walked away and unlocked when you approached. Most people turned it off because of unwanted locking and unlocking when in the garage, etc. The fobs were several times more expensive than the 01 and up anyway.

Yes it can, with the fob, by pressing the lock or unlock buttons. It just doesn't have the passive feature of the 98-99. It can also be programmed (through the DIC) to lock the doors when you drive and unlock when you put it in park. Your 2001 remote works like 99% of the cars in the world that have remotes. You press unlock to unlock and lock to lock on the fob.
It is apparent that a few folks need to go back and re-read Bill's post (#2) on this subject.
The "auto-lock/auto-unlock" feature has NOTHING to do with FOBS whatsoever.
I'm not sure anyone said it did, just that the 98/99 had a passive lock/unlock feature that activated when the fob was close to the car. I have only owned an 04 and can only say that it doesn't do that. I was just wondering if a person could buy one of those fobs and have that feature to work on other year cars.
Again, I have the window valet and the auto lock/unlock works fine in my car.

As to your point (active/passive fobs), a "retro fit" is possible but requires not only the purchase of the appropriate FOBs and TPMs, but a FOB/TPM receiver as well. The receiver in the car utilized by the FOBs is also the same receiver used by the Tire Pressure Monitoring system as well. So in going from from the "newer" (or "2nd" design) to the older system ("1st") design is a double whammy. You not only have the items to buy, but they are also more expensive too.
