So I started the car up today and took it for a sunday stroll. As soon as I got out of the neighborhood and onto the road, i shifted from 1-2 and then 2-3. However, when shifting into 3rd I was met with grinding; it didn't wanna go in. I continued driving and around the subdivision for a few minutes, I could never shift into 3rd gear. I pulled back into the driveway and turned the car off. When I'm at a stop with the car off or on, I can shift freely through all the gears including 3rd. It's only whenever I'm moving.
I've had the '08 Z06 shifter in my car for a few months now with no problems. No clutch problems either. The car has 19,000 miles. Could this be cuased by a bent fork? What could have caused this problem? Thanks guys.
Old/degraded clutch fluid wouldn't affect one gear in particular, it would affect all of them equally, correct? I'm going to change my clutch fluid this week as well.
Yup! Synchro's for 3rd gear are going south.Or the gear it self.I'd try the fluid change first though.
+2. I just went through this with my '03 Z. 3rd gear synchros were toast. I had previously changed fluid, had been doing the Ranger clutch fluid changes regularly, etc. Started having some grinding going into 3rd, then found I couldn't shift into third when doing spirited driving. Took it to the tranny shop, they road tested it, and said synchros. When they opened it up, the synchros were completely shot.
Changed my clutch fluid, it was almost solid black! Anyways, the clutch feels a lot better now, third gear is still a no-go. Synchros it is... how much is this gonna cost me if I take it to a dealer?

If they are gonna open up the tranny you should do a couple upgrades for insurance. You should get solid synchro keys (a broken key could possibly be your current problem), bronze shift pads, and make sure your 3-4 shift fork is steel. Since the tranny is getting pulled you might want to think about the clutch too if it's still stock, and possibly torque tube bushings
.. and the cost of those tranny upgrades on top of labor??? I'm doing the clutch when I install my cam.. Is this gonna run me over a G?!
It will be around a grand, possibly a couple hundred more for the parts and labor if you pull the tranny yourself and take it in to have them rebuild it. It will be more than that if you have them remove and install the tranny.

Having similar problems myself. Who did your rebuild? ~ Cost?
I think I may have Ryne at Cunningham Motorsports out here in SoCal rebuild it. I'm prolly gonna get a rebuild kit from sixspeed inc in houston as well. I've considered the Toy Shop in Pomona for the rebuild but I'll have to see what they say. Ryne quoted me 400 to pull it/inspect it, 300 for labor, and then parts on top of that. The package from sixspeedinc.com is 950. So it's gonna cost me a pretty penny... the days of driving like a 21 year old kid are now over! From here on out I'm driving like a 65 year old man!
While you are at it, make sure that you get a remote bleeder and install it as part of the transmission work. It's almost impossible to bleed the clutch once the tranmission is installed. Having the remote bleeder makes that easy, so you won't have to rely on the "Ranger turkey-baster" technique. It only cost about $50 from places like PFYC.com. Well worth it.
And if the tranny is out, change the clutch. They are not that expensive, and you don't want to go back in there again unless absolutely necessary.
