Respect is something that you earn - and it doesn't come from the kind of car that you own and drive. If you act like a responsible adult, it will go a long way to being treated with respect.
And one more thing - if you treat other people you meet respectfully, you will eventually have that returned to you.
Sorry - but a large number of the twenty-somethings I meet act like punks.....I guess thats the current style huh?
I have been driving corvettes for 32 years this year, and it never ends all the comments from people on why you should not be driving a vette or that they are a piece of crap, or what cars can beat it. It never stops no matter what age you are. They are just envious, watch those people, they are the same ones who damage to our cars while parked. Key jobs etc.
bought my first new vette (pic posted) when i was 19, I'm 46 now, you do the math. i had a bunch of jealous duds always giving me a hard time about it but the chicks sure did love it...ed
My first was a '73 coupe at 21 years old. I agree, it did seem to rile up the girls. I am 52 now and on my third vette. There is nothing like it.

1980 just sent me an IM they want their car back! I'm REALLY just joking.
Anyway I'm a young looking 31 and I've gotten the dad's car comment already.
There probably is a certain level of jealousy involved as well as some resentment when they see a young person with a Vette and they're driving a Hyundai. Hell, when I was 20 my car was an AMC Gremlin an orange one at that Now, I had a reason to be jealous
I'm 27, and about to be the new/last owner of a 99 C5. I have always known it would be just as you guys say. Every old guy is gonna be an *** about it.
I had an 84 Jaguar XJS V12 coupe when I was 24. Got the exact same looks and comments.
"Nice car", "how'd you pay for that?", "How much did you dad pay for it?", and so on. It was really funny for a while, cause I worked at a Wendy's as a third job for a short while. That really blew people away to come out of that place in my uniform, then into that car.
I'm sure it'll be the same way with this car. Now just to worry about the vandalizers!
I got a few funny looks pulling up in my 04 CE last Corvette show, who cares. I just parked and started enjoying the show. I paid for my first car at 16 and every one since and whatever anyone thinks is not important.

Please define what your idea of old is and how EVERY old guy is going to be an ***.
Anytime you make broad generalizations you will have someone challenge you - kind of like saying anyone that owns a Vette in his 20's is a spoiled brat driving his daddy's car. Know what I mean, Vern?
Ok, I can respect that error. Misjudgement is thine enemy, and here I am assuming (from alot of past run ins) that ALL older people are asses. Well, I will take it back by saying that there are actually a few older men and women (car enthusiasts) that were perfectly respectful. It wasn't a big number, but there were some.
Out here though, (near DC) I am thinking it will not be as nice. Almost everyone here is snobbish. Lots of cranky older people, and lots of vandals.
Everyone I work with asks how I can afford a vette. They all think it's a 04 or 05. Mine's a 99. I tell them all the people I know buying the Toyota Prius spent a lot more money then I did. It's all priority on what you drive. I wanted a sports car and the vette had all the things I wanted. Other's want an economy car and some want a four door car, etc. Anyone that doesn't believe the vette is yours is probably just jealous.

That's what happens when you live so close to "da' man"!
I recieved comments like that when I bought mine last year (I was 24 when I bought it, and turned 25 a couple months later). I was asked how I could afford it, what I paid, what my monthly payment was, etc. And because I'm a property manager whenever someone's rent goes up, they make comments about me owning a Vette and their rent going up. (I don't own the freaking properties, I manage them!!!)
My official line that I give everyone is: "It's not how much money you make, it's how you manage the money that you make."
Why does it matter what other people think about your car?
Because it gets annoying when every time you are pumping gas some tool comes up to you and gives you his $0.02 as to what he thinks of your/your car.
Clearly you haven't been in this situation or you would understand.
And also to some of our more senior members on here who think I am a punk by default because I am in my 20's, get real. I mind my own business, am respectful, and don't say anything to anyone, but idiots always run up to the car and say something stupid....it's not because I am being a *****.
