This is my first post, thanks for all the info you folks provide! I just bought a 98 model and the passenger window quit working. It makes a "click" but no attempt what so ever of moving down. The drivers side window makes a metal on metal sound about half way between travel up or down. Am I looking at breaking the bank here or something that might be somewhat common? The car only has 53K and is perfect in every other way. Thanks so much for the tips or links. Also, I have all 3 manuals..
My driver’s side window quit working a couple days ago. I tried the fist banging method to no avail. Tried the method in the link and it worked like a charm. At first I gave a couple thunks to the forward screw and nothing happened. I then tried the screw to the rear and it worked the first time. I also must be a mutant because I didn’t need a third arm.
Thanks!
Hi There,
When you hear the clicking sound that tells you that power is passing through the relay(relay is working) & that the window motor is not operational.
The hammer therapy is only a temporary fix.
Eventually you will be changing the motor.

But, I have read here in the other posts that even a new motor may give you problems. What happens is the armature inside the motor gets stuck in the bushings and doesn't fall back into alignment with the brushes. Slamming the door hard several times causes the motor to un-stick and start working again. I would suggest you keep doing this until it stops working all together. The drivers door with metal on metal noise concerns me. That should be looked at, something may be off track.
Once it sticks, it is not long until it quits working completely.
A new window regulator assembly costs about $300 new from a dealer, or you can find the eBay seller that sells GM replacements for less.
I have already had to replace both window regulator assemblies on my 04 Z06, so yours lasted longer than average.
If it is also making noise, the cable drive system may be messed up. I would check it out before it ends up scratching the glass and you have to replace the regulator and the side glass.
Thanks so much guys for the info. I am just getting home from a trip (I am a pilot), and I look forward to reading all the links tonite. Hopefully, tommorrow I can get out and tinker with it.
