Default Common 01 issues?

Hi there,
I have a 01 coupe 6spd. with 13k on the the clock. Not my dd have to use a battery tender constantly. No problems here. Some 01 's did have the wrong size oil rings installed from the factory using 1 or 2qts. per 500 miles.BTW: Some c5 owners fill the oil to the upper hole of the dipstick. This results in carbon deposits on the exhaust tips and if you keep topping off to the upper hole will have excessive oil consumption caused by the owner. The full mark is in the center of the hash mark area.Hope this helps.

The only problem specific to the 01s was the oil burning issue. Part of the problem was the way they were driven. If you drive the car consistently at high rpms like around town in second gear they would burn more oil. I think most of them would have been repaired under warranty by now. The 01s to 04s are basically the same cars with the second gen active handling, Z06 block and intake manifold. They also had the same clutch as the Z06. 01s have some advantages over the earlier C5s. If you can find a clean low mileage one they can be a great deal.

Default Oil consumption?

I've never heard this before about excessive oil consumption caused by overfilling the crankcase. IS this true?

I think it's true. After an oil change, my '01 is full at the bottom hole. If I put in another quart to bring it to the top hole, it just gets burned off. I finally figured this out and don't go over the bottom hole. No more oil consumption. Don't over fill a LS1.

Hell, my 79 El Camino has that problem and it has more engine in it than the Vette does. If you drive any high performance car like that, it's gonna burn oil.

Some 01's did have a oil consumption issue but it wasn't because of the way they are driven or how much oil was on the dipstick.

You don't want to generalize and state that all 01s had oil consumption issues. You are just going to start another flame war if you do that. A very low percentage of 2001 production cars had legit oil consumption issues. For more info check this thread: http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show....php?t=1988537

Default Oil Level Note

If you read the manual it states that you should fill up to the upper mark when driving competition. This keeps the oil pick up submerged in oil as it sloches around in the pan. Don't want to run out now do we.

headlight gear
sticky high rpm clutch, replaced with spec 3+
waterpump @ 63K

I have an 01 6spd without problems, I'm looking to see what others say.

This oil burning "problem" is over-blown. I don't know anyone with an 01 who has it. Do the people who mention it in this thread actually have the problem? I doubt it, but they have "heard" of the problem so mention it as a fact. Out of the thousands and thousands of 01's built, how many actually have the problem? I for one sure don't!!
