You may have a PASS Key problem. The symptoms are exactly what would happen if you used the wrong key to start the car. One thing to remember with a PASS Key problem is if it doesn't start you need to wait 3 minutes before trying again. To deter theft the system sets a timer that prevents the car from starting for 3 minutes. If you try to start the car before the timer runs out the timer is reset to 3 minutes. It is an excellent anti theft system but can drive you crazy if it is acting up.
Check the codes on the DIC. If the system wasn't reading the key properly there should be a code.
If you can push start the car it isn't a PASS Key problem.
i was thinking the starter to since i am running a set of SLP headers and they run real close.... but i guess some further investigating is needed when it happens. by the way DTC's are clear, no codes.
The first night I came home with my 01 I had a similar issue. I used the 2nd key and thats when it all went to Crxxp. I went back to the #1 key and all was fine. I cleaned the #2 key with alcohol and then it was fine and still is.
The #1 key was the key the owner used the entire time. The #2 key was in a bag with all of the dealer stuff. Who knows maybe it had some crud on it.
After cleaning the #2 key I never had the problem again.
Assuming you aren't getting any DIC messages, try this: When the no start condition presents itself - be patient, turn the key to start and hold it - and this may take a minute or two (or up to 5 in my case), just sit there and hold it. If the vehicle eventually starts (which is highly likely) without you changing a thing, you have a starter that is on it's way out. The starter is washed with heat from the exhaust and eventually develops bad brushes which cause "dead spots" preventing it from kicking over.
I have also known the terminals inside the ignition that read the chip on the key to break loose. Make sure they are in place and touching the chip on the key. If this is not the issue I would move on to the starter as suggested.

This sums it up very well! This is exactly the problem I had with my car. I had the issue for almost a YEAR, and the dealership could never figure it out. A couple months ago, I finally got frustrated enough with the issue that I started troubleshooting it myself. I first replaced the theft deterrent relay near the BCM in the passenger footwell area. That didn't fix it. I got a schematic for the whole starting system and determined the problem was downstream of the theft deterrent relay. It led right to the starter solenoid and starter. And even though I told the dealership what I'd found out, they still had to get the car to not start so they could troubleshoot it. Well it finally acted up for them, and sure enough, it was the starter. Had it replaced under warranty, and I've had no problems since.
Have you checked the battery on the key fob? My mother-in-law's Chevy Malibu stalled in the middle of the road because her battery was dying. I am not sure if it would be the same scenerio for a vette, but its worth a shot?
