Default Fuel Gauge

Symptom:

Was driving around today with a full tank of gas when all of a sudden the fuel gauge dropped to empty along with the usual ping on the display panel advising me the fuel level was low. Everything else is working fine?

Mileage: 20k

Has anyone seen this before?

ya, everyone has. Check the sticky's. Fill with Chevron Supreme w/ Techron. Throw an extra bottle of Techron in the tank, and then run it every month or two. It's just the sender gets sticky.

I tried the Techron thing for a while when I first noticed gas guage issues, but it didn't fix it. I had the right tank sending unit repaired under warranty, as this was the only fix for it at that point. I got code P1431, so check your car and see if it has any DTC's. Try the Techron first though for sure! It's also good maintenance for my car now to run a bottle of Techron through it every couple thousand miles.

after my second bottle of Techron, my fuel gauge finally went back to normal. I'm currently stationed at the USEmbassy in Mexico City and have no way of getting Chevron gas. However, COSTCO saved the day; yes they do have COSTCO here in Mexico.

I'll keep this post in mind... but I'm going to buy stock in the fuel additive... it saved the day.

here's a picture of my vette

Thanks

I hope that continues to work for you. It was working for me for a while, but the gas gauges are back to their bad habits. I have been through the Techron thing, I have cleaned my rear grounds, and now I am soon going to replace the fuel sending units... I hope that fixes it once and for all. I have been told the "ink" on the units (whatever that is) has been upgraded, making them more reliable.

Gotta love that quicksilver

My gauge has been acting up as well, especially if I let it get lower than 1/2 a tank. How much is a sending unit replacement job? My understanding is that there are two? Should you go ahead and replace both?
Thanks fpor the help.

I've had this problem many, many times. Always while around 1/4 of a tank give or take, defiintely only when below half a tank. This started right from the get go shortly after I bought the car brand new in 2000. At the time, around 2000-2001, there weren't a lot of resources to turn to as far as finding out if others were experiencing the problem so I didn't know how widespread it was and had no clue what was causing it. Took it in multiple times under warranty and every time they would just replace the fuel sensor (right side most if not all of the time I believe). Never solved the problem, it would always return in time.

I was out of commission completely for a couple years from mid 2003 to mid 2005 after a near fatal skydiving accident and when I joined the living again I found that there was a service bulletin about this, alleging that it was the result of basically "cheap" gas for lack of a better word, and that it could be resolved by reprogramming. I took it in to the dealer last year and had them do this (or allegedly they did it), along with a bunch of other stuff that needed to be addressed, but the problem still crops up occasionally if I use less reputable gas like ARCO. The problem doesn't seem to occur if I use premium gas from Shell or Chevron. In short, it's all about the gas, though that's no excuse for our gas gauges to malfunction.

I'm wondering if we should move this thread to C5 general or C5 Tech.

What do you guys think?

Either one of those would probably be a better home for it...

Mine finally resolved with LOTS of Techron. I added over the recommended amount and it has resolved completely. I did also notice that before the 'fix' My gas guage would not go all the way to the top on a full tank. This is gone too.

Anyone use anything other than Techron?

When I first got my Z06 I added STP complete fuel system cleaner ($7 at wally world) and since then I've only filled up with Chevron Premium, I've never had an issue although the previous owner did report having the problem once.

I bought some Techron this past weekend at Advance Auto Parts. They have it on sale, 2 bottles for $8.00 and that's a good price.
