on the way home from work i took main streets instead of taking the freeway like i usually do, it was about 7:30pm and about no more than 80 degrees out side when by the time i got home which is about 20mins later i noticed my coolant temp was at 220 degrees, that seemed kinda high to me so i let the car idle to see if it was overheating and it went up to 228 which is the highest ive ever seen it and this whole time the fan never turned on. Do you thank it is normal or should the fan have turned on. any experiences and suggestions is greatly apprecieated.
I copied this from a previous post. I think the car mentioned in this post is a 1997, but should be close to the same as yours, hope this helps.
Totally normal ... from the Service Manual, here's how your fans are programmed .....
The low speed cooling fan is commanded on when the coolant temperature reaches 108°C (226°F). It is turned off if the coolant temperature lowers to 104°C (219°F). The high speed cooling fan is commanded on when the coolant temperature reaches 113°C (235°F). It is turned off if the coolant temperature lowers to 108°C (226°F). When the A/C is on and the coolant temperature reaches 85°C (185°F), the low speed cooling fan will be turned on at vehicle speeds less than 56 kPh (35 mph).
It uses the single "fan" because the PCM only thinks there is one ...
this time it got up to 225F iturned the car of and there was alot of pressure in the resevoir tank and i could here it bubbling, has any body experienced this if so what did it turn out to be
What you are experiencing is quite normal. These cars were designed to run at the temps you are getting (emissions purposes). If you are that concerned, when was the last time you changed out the coolant?
Clean your radiator. These cars are bottom feeders and suck up a ton of stuff into the front of the radiator.
Just get a medium bristle brush and lay down in front of the car and reach up and brush out all the crap. You can also use compressed air...
Add a bottle of water wetter and you will be good to go.
Since you live in SD, you do not need a 50/50 mix of water and fluid.
You could easily go with 33% fluid. Water dissipates heat much more effectively than radiator fluid.
