This weekend my Father-in-law let me take his brand new 08 Z06 for a spin, I parked it back in his garage with only 303 miles on the clock. I'm still going to keep and love my 02 convertible with 35k, but I want to make a mod.
Besides the extra horsepower, I really covet the nice short throw shifter. Is it possible to put that shifter in my C5? I have always been disappointed with my square shifter *** and the big throw.
I am sure someone has thought of this before me so I did a search and I couldn't find anything. Sorry if this is really old news, but the shifter in the 08 z06 was absolutely perfect, as was the rest.
...next to the thousands of references to the removal of the "demon key", this is probably the most discussed topic since the C6/Z06 came out...
In C5 Tech, click on search this forum (in the red banner). Use keywords "c6/z06 shifter". You'll find hundreds of past discussions, some with images.
Took me a while to find this thread because it is so old, but I guess it is the best C6 to C5 shifter installation thread. If you can find better, please post it. Now I need to think about maybe getting a different boot.
Go for it, you'll be suprised how easy it is. Don't get confused by the rubber filler he used because the stock one fits perfect. I do have some pictures but I need to get them to photobucket. I did lock my old shifter pin before I removed it.
Remove the console and instrument face plate. You can find the how-to here somewhere if you are not familiar with it. This is what you will see. Remove the four nuts to take off the closeout boot.
Put the shifter in neutral. Press down to engage the shift control neutral lock pin.
You will need a torx driver to remove the 3 fasteners. 2 hold the shifter in place and 1 fastens the shifter rod to the shifter.
Here are the old and new.
Now just reverse the process. Torque the torx to 22 ft/lbs. I am still using my original boot until I get a new one. It was easy to modify. I cut a bit of the stitching, turned it inside out and wire tied it to the new ****.
Put the **** on and screw it in place.
Replace the console and panel, pull the boot down and there you have it.
This was a pretty quick "sketch" of what to do but combined with Patches' how to I think anyone can do this.

Hey Dave,
how's your dad doing? I haven't talked to him in a few weeks. Our companies are going through a split and I will not be working with him any more after the end of this week.
Back to the C5, the C6 Z06 shifter is a great mod. I installed it in July of 06!
I just removed a B&M ripper and put in the 08Z06 shifter.I got it from Gene Cully at Corvette Parts House. Price was very reasonable and came with the complete assembly even the ****er box. Simple install no notchy feeling once again a pleasure to drive ,even my wife likes its ,unfortunately she wants to take the car now ,maybe I should have rethought that ..LOL Do it you will love it
other than the shifter bent back and shorter, is there REALLY any difference in the shifter or box shaft goes into?????????????
Angled back lever, boot, ergonomic **** and manner of attachment of the ****...the rest is pretty much the same from '97 to '08.
It feels better (subjective) and that's all that matters to most owners...
I just received my shifter, Thanks Gene, and I'm going to tackle this job ASAP.
One quick question. In the picture, I noticed that the new shifter does not have any rubber insulation on the area where it bolts down. The shifter I received also did not have any. Do you transfer that rubber from the old shifter, or do you just install metal to metal?
Just put one in my 2004 Vert two weeks ago and all I can say is WOW. Better shifting and I really like the shorter shifter. I also installed the new two tone red and black boot and ****. My car is Torch Red/Black top and interior, color is more maroon but I still like it.
Got my shifter and boot and **** from parts Bob at Fichtner Chevrolet, a forum vendor. Great pricing and service!! Email him at parts@fichtnerchevrolet.com for pricing and availability.

I would assume you transfer and DO NOT install metal-to-metal.
