Default Is it GAUGES or GAGES???

Not that I stay awake at night thinking of this but did GM make a consistant error when they spelled GAGES on the Instument cluster? I had always thought it was spelled gauges. I also checked a new 08 ZO6 and its spelled the same way on that cluster too.

Gage is a variation of gauge.

Just looked in the dictionary.

per Merriam-webster

gauge - an instrument for or a means of measuring or testing: as a: an instrument for measuring a dimension or for testing mechanical accuracy b: an instrument with a graduated scale or dialect for measuring or indicating quantity.

variant: gage

So its almost like they are telling you what it is supposed to be but they also realize that some people like GM are misleading the public...

lol

"gauge" is the more common usage. I'm pretty sure "gage" is only a variant because people can't spell and M-W adopts colloquial usages after a while.

Its another GM cost c*tting meas*re. By eliminating the "U" in all their man*als they saved $450.00 in printing and paper costs

I see gage used in engineering reference books quite frequently when referring to gage pressure and such. It seems more of a British thing though. I will stick with gauge.

Agreed. I typically use "gauge" as a noun and "gage" as an adjective or verb.

I.e. "Autometer gauges" "gage pressure" "to gage size"

What Americans tend to do is just start spelling things wrong, then claim the correct way is the "British" spelling and both are acceptable.

I just came in from the garage after checking mine. It says "gauge"!

Now I'm on my way to the PFYC website to order me some "Limited Edition" badges!

I think 'gauges' looks better than 'gages'. It needs that U.

Man you guys....so ignorant.

Clearly what happened is GM messed up and they figured it was a lot cheaper to pay off Webster's to change the dictionary rather than change America's Sports Car!
