Below is a little write-up I did a couple weeks ago in response to someone asking about CAIs and Cat-back exhaust options, I've edited out the stuff about the CAI for purposes of this thread. Hope it helps, if nothing else it gives you a good starting point to work from.

If you want something a little meatier sounding than stock but you don't want to wake the neighbors when you start and rev your car, you'll probably want one of the Touring models from Corsa or Borla, or the standard Magnaflow exhaust (not the Magnapack). Also, I've heard almost nothing but positive comments about the Z06 Titanium exhaust (Ti's) that often are up for sale on these forums for between $300-$400. it's a vast improvement over the stock C5 exhaust, and really the way it should have sounded most say. Performance gains seem to be about the same as the other aftermarket Cat-Backs and it's lighter than your stock exhaust. Lastly, and the one I'm probably going to go with after extensively evaluating all the others, is the Billy Boat (aka B&B) Route 66's. They seem to be a notch above the other Touring exhausts in sound/volume by most accounts, and with a nice bassy rumble. They're also cheaper than the other Touring exhausts.
If you want more punch, the Borla Stingers are extremely popular, but by all accounts they drone between about 1700-2200 RPMs which is right at cruising speed on the Highway. There are reports of people not reaching their destinations because they shot themselves in the face along the way from the constant drone. If you're just going to drive it occasionally and around town though, these might be right for you. The Corsa Pace Car exhaust is also very popular and falls into about the same category. The Magnaflow Magnapack is another option at this level and yet another would be the B&B PRTs (I came very close to buying these, but they're apparently VERY loud at WOT, though a very nice sound).
If you want REALLY loud, then the B&B Bullets or the SLP Loudmouth might be for you, but be warned
.There are some other lesser known options (Granteilli, GHL, etc.) as well, but that covers the majors out there. Personally, I'm looking for a Cat or Axle-back system that sounds a little meatier and bassier at idle than stock, pretty quiet at cruise, and yet sounds like a Corvette should sound at WOT. If money was the biggest factor I'd go with some used Ti's. I'm also going to put in an X-Pipe, which I think most would agree is a good replacement for your stock H-Pipe, and will smooth out your exhaust a little and perhaps offer a little performance increase as well. Some people say they can really feel the difference when then install an X-Pipe, not sure how much of that is just in their head though.
BTW, here's a link to an exhaust comparison chart on MAM's website that compares the volume of each of the major exhausts at idle, WOT, and cruise. Unfortunately it doesn't include the Borlas for some crazy reason.

Anyway, that's a relatively brief summary of the research I've gathered, take it for what it is, my personal research and comments. Hope it's helpful to you and to others looking to do these same, very common and popular mods. You should also seriously consider getting your car tuned by a professional after you do the other stuff. You should see some big improvements across the board including gas mileage after you do that, and with an A4 most say that's one of the best ways you can spend your money. I'm going to have LAPD do the tune after they install the Vararam and I get my cat or axle-back installed. A good tune would typically run around $500-$600.
Good luck whatever you decide and enjoy the mods!
