I have some good friends that are Asian and they are seriously into DSMs. Not poser-types either...serious go-fast guys that build their own engines/suspensions/turbos/etc. However, they love my stable of American muscle...especially the Z06. I'm trying to turn them to the dark-side...

Default Ethnics and the American Icon : Z06

Ok, I'm 1st generation German born in America. Do I count since I don't drive a BMW or Porsche? Kertong, you sound like an American to me . My grand dad came over in 1935 with his family ( my dad) when things started to go south in Germany. Grand dad changed our last name to be less ethnic and more American. My dad was not allowed to speak German in the house and they did not teach me the German language.
I have one friend Ron Kino (chinese decent) that has a clean 1973 Red LT1 and another Dave Hosokoawa ( Japanese decent)that has had one Vette or another for twenty plus years. Used to date his sister in high school.
I see the car not the race of the person driving it , but I do notice the gender!
Kertong, glad to have you on the forum.

I drive a C6 in the bayarea from San Mateo and I am korean. Had my share of imports and owning a vette with all the power this is what I have been trying to achieve with all the mods I did in the past years to my "rice rocket" car. I drive a S14 as a commuter. Probably wondering why I am here on C5/Z06 forum when I frequent the C6 because I wanted to know if C6 stocks 18/19 offsets 56/79 fit a C5/Z06? I am trying to sell my stocks to a friend that is half fillipino with a C5/Z06.. funny.

I'm asian. I came from the Import side. I've owned a few japanese super cars:

2 TT Supras
1 TT RX-7
2 TT 300zx
1 NSX
1 S2000

Let me tell you, the Z06 is the best bang for the buck. Ever since I bought one, I never went back. All my asian friends drive nothing but imports.

Half Asian here...

I've always loved Corvettes, but I never thought I'd go and buy one. Then my brother-in-law bought one a few years ago. I drove it on occasion and was sold. I now have an '04 Z06. All of my friends (Asian or otherwise) love the car, even though 95% of them drive imports.

I am a fan of all cars (and trucks)... I think it takes a lot of ignorance to like/dislike a car based simply on whether it's an import or domestic vehicle.

Filipino guy here, I have my american cars in Europe and my European cars in America. As for the post about being loyal to america by buying American cars only..thats crap. I buy what I consider to be the best out there that I can afford. It just happens to be a Corvette..though I would love an Aston Martin..I can't afford one. I generally disdain any other american sports car other than the corvette, I do feel European sports cars as a whole are superior, but I love corvettes because they are up to par with them and have distinct advantages in some areas.I do have a Jaguar XJS that I prefer for cruising on pacific coast highway when I come home to visit. If the vette were to become a car that I no longer liked, I'd shop for whatever is the best car for my budget. I do plan on getting either a Lotus or Porsche in the future.
btw I show my loyalty to America by serving in the military, if anyone questions that. I also have chosen to live in Europe while serving our country because its a better place for me being a sports car enthusiast. oh, and the beaches are topless in Spain

ehhhh im from india.....came here in 1998. When I was a 15 i drove my moms carolla around the block. My first car was a 95 mustang and I got the whole "you are indian, shouldnt you be driving a civic or something." in high school but i smacked around a lot of civics in my area lol. After that, on to bigger and better things, CORVETTES. WHO's YO DADDY?

Moral of the story: they got EFFD in the AAA

I'm Asian. Chinese-Indonesian to be exact. And, no, I'm not a US citizen or, at least, not yet

I think the notion of "Asians (who live in the US) only drive Asian cars because they are pro-Asia" is not entirely true. It has to do with familiarity. American-made/branded cars just don't feel right to them, this is especially true when we are talking about those who are not auto-enthusiasts. The same situation also applies to other races. It's just about familiarity or what you grew up with.

That aside.

Yes, I have seen other Asians in C5s (so far). I live in Midwest and so far I have seen a (Chinese I think) guy from MI who could drive his Z06 at an SCCA Autox. Another local Chinese guy drives a bluish-silver C5 and he lives about 2 miles from my house. My situation is somewhat rare though.

Nowadays, I don't have brand loyalty at all (used to be Toyota fans, came from a family who owns Toyota only for DECADES now). I'll be a ***** to anything with the best bang for the buck within my budget (the Z06 is an example ). I still lean slightly more towards imports (not just Asian/Japanese cars) when it comes to overall aspects of automotive world. The two BMW M3s are the example (they are daily drivers).

Overall, I'm Americanized (borderline white-washed ). My wife is white and I listen to Country music. How about this for a weird combo: an Asian driving a BMW blaring Country music

It's all good

Wow, more of us here than I thought there were in the country!

Some awesome stories here though, I enjoyed reading about everyone's background! I love it when stereotypes (like asians must drive imports.. but let's admit it, no honda has the iconic soul or passion of the corvette) are broken.

My friends all say I should move to texas, because I drive f-bodies/corvettes and I'm always going off about the 2nd amendment and how california doesn't respect it I'm also known by my friends to throw the best smoked bbqs every week or two.. hence the avatar

Okay, you need to shut your damned mouth. Before my GTO, I drove a G35 coupe. Slow, handled well, decent interior, and was just plain fun to drive. I had some boltons on the car, but nothing too major. Intake manifold, exhaust, pads for the Brembos, and some minor visual mods. Whatever. That car, even after beating the everloving **** out of it, making tons of passes, auto cross, and general stupidity, NEVER gave me a problem. I went in for warranty work ONCE to get the head unit replaced because of a short.

My GTO drove great for about 7 months. I drove it every day, raced it, and just generally enjoyed it. It was okay that the AC never blew cold, and smelled like ***, and the panel gaps inside and out were about as consistent as the weather, because I had an LS2, a T56, and an IRS and they made up for that. Within the span of one week, the water pump blew up and the car developed a major leak which lead to the interior flooding. After getting all that "fixed", I drove the car in the rain and it flooded again.

The rear footwell was so flooded that the floor mat was almost floating. All that from an hour and a half of driving.

I come from a Lexus family. My parents have driven Lexus since their inception in the late 80's. And you know what? They have NEVER had problems like I had with my GTO. And it was an 06. We have a 1992 SC400 with 140k miles on it that has been heavily neglected in terms of maintenance, is usually filled with 87, has gone 15k between oil changes (good job Mom), and yet has never had a warranty type issue. It has never leaked, never blown up an accessory, and the AC still blows colder than my GTO. To say that Asians buy Japanese because we have some sort of "ancestral loyalty" is absolutely ridiculous. My family buys Japanese because we have NEVER had problems with them, and my experience with my GTO has reinforced their stereotype of GMs.

But thanks, though, for your insinuation that my parents don't deserve to live in America and should move back to Thailand because they believe (and thus far have been proven right) that Toyota/Lexus makes a higher quality product than GM.

That having been said, they won't be happy when I go out and buy my C5Z.
