Just to ad my 2 cents concerning a few things that have been said:
Polishes are abrasive and used to polish out defects. Depending on the product it may or may not leave behind a little protection.
Wax is a protectant. When your car looks less swirled after wax it is because the wax has fillers that fill the swirls-or-the carnuba has filled them in, as carnuba is a natural filler.
If you are seeing color on the pad/cloth when you wax or polish the paint is either single stage -or- multi-stage (base/clear) that has started to oxidize. Sometimes a good detailer can take care of oxidation, sometimes you have to repaint.

I wax off every day except Saturday. That day is reserved for the wife!
Probably any time I wash the car and its still light out when Im done, I put a little Carnuba on it (P21S) Just the top surfaces (hood, bow, rear deck, tops of fenders and quarters). So . . . a lot I guess. Its therapy for me.
I try to Clay bar, then Zaino it twice or thrice during the summer. (+ 3 pts for working "thrice" into a post on Corvette forum)
At the start of each show season (early spring) I'll give it a good wash. Cleaner, clay bar and wax. That's it. Once a week during the show season it get's spray detailer. Works for me. My Superformance Cobra has never seen wax. I use a product called Dri Wash 'n Guard. The paint is just as fresh and glossy as when it was shipped from the factory in South Africa 13 years ago.
I guess I'm still a virgin. Haven't had it long,,so it's going to be my first time. Going to do the clay bar thing first,,Does that count as foreplay??
