I got my vette last fall. I've driven it about 1500 miles since I got it. Yesterday I was pulled over in Iowa because the windows are tinted. The officer was very nice but in the end it was a $70 fine... ouch. However, I was surprised he could ticket me in Iowa for a local law they have when I have Minnesota plates. What's up with that??
At any rate, he said my windows were 6% and they allowed nothing less than 87% transparency. I hate to take the tint off because I really like it. I also dislike getting $70 fines though. How do you get the stuff off?
Were you just visiting that state or are you there permenantly? If I were just passing through, I would pay the ticket and not worry about it. Tint laws suck, but they get us sometimes...
If you look at the very top edge of the side windows, you can see where the tint stops. You can pull it from there, and if you are lucky it will come off and bring all the adhesive with it. More often than not, the adhesive stays behind. when that happens, you have to use something like goo gone or other adhesive remover to get whats left off. A razor blade helps too, but you don't want to be messing around on the back window with a razor blade. You could damage the defrost strips. If you really wanted to do it yourself just do the sides, then take it to a tint shop and pay them to remove the back window stuff.
I was just passing through Iowa. I am a resident of Minnesota. The officer was nice enough to research the Minnesota laws for my car. And my windows were way out of compliance even in Minnesota.
Yeah who ever passed the tint law should be strangled. I actually thing they don't impede driving but HELP. I never have the sun in my eyes when I'm driving. And lets say I do have a car w/o tint. I just throw on sun glasses with far more tint then the windows would ever have. So go figure.
I guess on a cloudy day it could make a difference however, I never have the slightest problem seeing out. Ever. It's a lame law if you ask me. Maybe we should start a petition

I think tint laws are needed. you need to have a legal tint limit. you have to set the limit at a level that will accomodate most people. It would be dangerous to have kids putting 2% tint on every piece of glass in the car.
Most people may be able to drive with 5-10% tint but people with not so great vision, old people, etc may not be able to. you have to set the limit at a level that the general population is safe at.
I am sure "legally" he could cite you for the violation, but I would consider fighting the citation. In WI we get a lot of people from out of state and if they are just passing through we don't issue citations for no front plate or window tint. We have a lot of Illinois tourists with dark window tint and a lot of people from the U.P and Florida that don't display front license plates. Sounds to me like a bad choice in issuing a citation. I would take your chances with the judge.

Just passing through I would fight this one and good luck

I always thought tint laws were in force to proctect police or those on the outside of the vehicle. If this was the intent of the law, I agree with it, and think cops should be able to see into a vehicle, for their safety.
I like having my windows dark, but not so dark you cannot see inside. Mine are at 20% on my Vette. The law here in Bama states that a car can have any % desireable on the back window but the side windows must be 35% or lighter. Trucks and suv's can have all windows whatever they want except for the driver and passenger windows which have to be 35% or better.
I had mine on my truck tinted at 20% for about 4 years until I was busted by state trooper in January. Now when I drive my truck I squint because I'm not used to the bright light. I even hit my hand on the window one day when I went to stick it out the window to open the mailbox.
I understand the whole police safety tthing completely, I wouldn't want to be a cop walking up to a car with windows that I couldn't see through. But at the same time, I think if you have nothing to hide and you can drive perfectly fine with tint, than whats the big deal???
You probably won't pass inspection next time, since they now check tint in most/many states. Unless you have a friend do your inspection and pass you, you'll need to remove the old and put on the new.
