Default build or buy a 427 engine?

I know how to build engines but.....is it cheaper to build an engine or buy a new crate engine and add a cam or a used high horsepower modded 427 engine.

i have not priced parts in years

FYI Vette is for the road track

Well the LS7 is a 427, they're about $13K. I think they make 450 at the wheels or something to that effect.

I'm not sure what a "built" 427 costs though. I'd say if you used that newer LSX block it might cost a little less and it would make more power since you could customize as you wish. You could probably use LS7 heads even and have them ported. Depends how crazy you want to go. I bet you could make an LSX that made 7-800 at the crank and still be streetable.

How about a 1000 mile LS7 long block minus intake for 7500.00???

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show...ight=z06+motor

And here's one with 22kmi that put down 530rwhp for 6500.00 Dunno if it's the complete motor or not.

I would go this route if I was the OP. You get proven power and they're already broken in for you. Just plug and play! Can't beat those prices either!

my goal would be 500 ft/lbs of torque at the wheels

Before I decided to do a 'straight forward' rebuild on my LS6, I sat down and figured what it might cost to build a 413 or 416 (4.060x4.00)based on the L92 block/heads, L76 intake, etc.
I came up with about $6,500, give or take $500. This was with re-using my current TSP cam/springs and SLP pulley.
I was going to mildy port the heads myself, shooting for 550-570 HP and around 500-525 FT LBS, at the crank, for a daily driver with decent MPG.
Spend another $1200-$1500 for CNC porting and a stroker cam with lots of exhaust duration, and you might hit your RWTQ mark.

I would like to see someone build a LS7 block with a stock 3.62" crank, L92 heads, and a custom grind cam for 7,800 RPM. Perfect for a 3,000 lb car with 4.10s and LW clutch set-up.

Does the LS7 GM crate engine come with wiring/ECM/elec.?

Since you are going to road race the motor I would not go the crate route since they are not forged motors.

You could save money by doing some of the work yourself. You could buy a shortblock from SDPC or some other reputable outfit and then add the components you want to reach your goals.

we are putting together all the components of my LS7 build which netted 565rwhp / 540rwtq. You can make some substitutes that will net you a bit less HP and save you a few $$$$.

The LS7 is a good platform since you are going to RR because it already has the dry sump system built in.
