Sounds like my Z06 is equipped for just about anything, even the desert. I wonder if my next assignment will be in the middle east....

IF you use this feature, the owner's manual says to change the oil after this.

Cylinder cutoff when the car overheats is now somewhat common, not when the C5 was new, which makes it ahead of it's time! I had an '05 Focus for a few years and it had the same feature.

Awesome info .... I knew that the engine in my STS Caddy is advertised to run up to 50 miles without coolant and without harm, even though I'd not like to try it... part of the reason for the ability is, according to a GM engineer, thanks to the larger oil capacity, VS other engines, which I can see somewhat, and also to the use of Dexcool, which I can't see, but he claims it impregnates the bock......
I guess the vette engines should have the same features....

Hell I just turned 50 and I dont think my compression stroke is what it used to be

How's that saying go
" I'm not as good as I once was.. but I'm as good once as I ever was"

Don't know about no coolant, but it operates with a non-functioning water pump. Man, is that security or what!!

I kinda wonder if you had an A4 (auto trans) what it would look like after 50 miles without any radiator cooling?

Good information

On a side note: Enquiring minds want to know.....Buckskinner, are you for real? You gotta be a Yale graduate or and MIT grad to consistently type your posts in "hillbillyeze" the way you do.

I wouldn't even dare. The reduced power is a result of the lesser number of cylinder use. I know that Chrysler cars do this, but they're engineered for that purpose, not as an emergency backup. The engine limits what it can do, likely creating a new "top engine performance threshold". 55MPH might be pushing too hard for the reduced power of the engine.

Think of it as driving around on a donut tire....theoretically it's there for you to drive on, but definitely not meant for speed or extended use.

To trick the engine into thinking that it's in this power-saver mode could wind up doing far more bad than good as a result, and what would have cost an extra $25.00 at the pump, may cost you $1,500+ in the repair shop.

I don't believe this is correct if you disengage the lifters and the valves stop opening in 4 cylinders the other 4 will have to work pretty darn hard the move those pistons.
If you don't believe me go and take the rockers off 4 cylinders and try to turn the engine over by hand!
