They easily clear stock brakes.......no spacers needed. A few guys around here use ZR-1 17x11's on all 4 corners for auto-x wheels

Yes! A guy at Roebling had that very setup with some Khumo's. Said it ran good (he was very quick) and the cheaper cost of the 17" track rubber made a pretty big difference over the course of a season.
Looked pretty great too.

FYI, here's a good article I had bookedmarked about using C4 GS spec wheels on a C5. The guy I mentioned above was actually running those an not OEM spec ZR1 wheels.
AFAIK, C4 GS wheels are 17x9.5 with 56mm offset on front and 17x11 with 50mm offset on rear. The OEM C4 ZR-1 rears are 36mm (and would stick out quite a bit, the GS wheels tuck decently, even without the add-on fender flares).

Hope that helps!

How about a set of 17" fronts off a 98? I have access to free set that I would like to use for drag radials.

Only the calipers (painted) and brake pads are different between the C5 and C5Z. All 17" C5 front wheels will fit.

My answer remains the same - front or back. However - the 98 rims are only 8" wide. You're not going to get much rubber on them
