E85 is an excellent idea. The problem is we should not be using corn oil to produce it. There are a lot better sources for ethanol. In some countries they have been using sugar cane based ethanol for years. The cost is almost nothing and it takes very little energy to convert the sugar cane to fuel.
I say go for the E85 conversion. I may do the same some day.
With more people using e85, the cost of animal feed went up causing food prices to go up. It contributes to more green house gases from what I hear. There is really no benefit from it besides not giving OPEC our$$$$$ to fund terrorism......... Well maybe thats the best benefit of e85.
good farmers like me should be able to take corn to ethanols plants for a higher price.
I do not have a great love for E-85, but I do like more power. I also like not buying oil from many of the people we get it from. I do not know if it is the answer but it is a step in a better direction. Brazil seems to be able to make it work. E-85 can also be made out of organic products other than corn. We also have alot, not sure how much, of land we pay farmers not to farm.
Advantages:
More Power
Less foreign oil
Renewable
Can be made out of other organic crops
Etc...
I put a tank full in my 07 Flex Fuel Avalanche ONCE
My mileage dropped 20%
So it cost me approx. 12% more per mile the using 87.
So unless they drop the cost to around 25% less then 87 I will not run it again.
btw. No noticeable difference in performance either
SO-it takes a gallon of some fuel to create the Ethenol, it generally get's 10-20% WORSE mileage and it takes corn out of the human food chain-where's the upside?
