I've already been through one tranny and it's happening again. The synchro's are goin out and i'm not puttin another stock tranny in from gm. So I need everyone's input. I want to buy a solid built tranny. What do ya'll think?
I just had a bearing explode a while back at the track. It took out 5th gear and a bunch of other stuff along with it. A fellow Corvette owner and track junkie owns the local Aamco. They rebuilt it for $2600.
The major cost was labor associated with removing/reinstalling the tranny. The actual parts and labor costs were fairly cheap since not everything had to be replaced. If I could have dropped the tranny myself, the rebuild would have been less than a grand. Just the cost of a new RPM tranny would have been ~ $2k and I still would have had the labor costs.
We discussed updgrading to steel forks, etc, but he talked me out of it, saying that most of the stuff that gives is made of softer metal so it doesn't destroy the whole tranny if it goes.
Only time and a few more track days will tell whether that was good advice. Let us know what you decide. Good luck.
the reason this is happening is because gm at my local dealership doesn't wanna uphold their part of the bargain. i had the tranny replaced june 15 of last year. i thought the warranty was a 3 year 36k mile warranty. well they said that they only gave me a 1 year 12k mile warranty. we i've put over 28k miles on the car so i was very disappointed. well i came home and pulled out my paperwork. it does indicate that it is a one year warranty. no where on my receipt does it state anything of a 12k mile attribute. so seems to me that if it's not on my original receipt that it doesn't exist and they don't have a leg to stand on because i have 5 days to get my car their to get it done. if i can get them to replace it for free, then i'm gonna end up doin that because it's not really in my budget to spend close to $3k right now on my car. i'd rather order my cam and put the blower on the car. if i can't get the tranny replaced by the dealership then i'm gonna order an rpmtranny or a d&d performance tranny. not sure which one yet, but most likely the rpm
I agree that you should find out why you are going through trannies when the stock ones are not bad units at all. Do you use the clutch pedal while shifting? It could also be due to being from Mississippi.
