I usually use the GMOLS as a guide, and I check the oil to see what it looks like, when it looks like it needs to be change, I change it. When 3000 miles comes I usually check it and if it looks good, I just check it periodically.

Once a year or 10K miles. Read your owner's manual.
Modern engines don't require an oil change every 3K miles - in fact the only benefit to this frequent oil change schedule is that it adds more money to the oil company's pocket.....and we all want to do our share to help out this struggling industry.
You're throwing away perfectly good oil and money.
But this has been discussed once or twice here, maybe a search on oil changes will yield some results.

I saw the same article today, and I'm kind of in agreement with it. My DD truck with 123,000 m gets it when I feel like it which is usually every 6 or 7,000 m. The Vette gets it about every 5,000, or once a year depending on how many miles I put on it ( alot more miles this year ). I do drive the vette hard, so I figure this is about OK.The article was interesting though, and it really should be based on the condition of the oil, not some arbitrary number. I remember a test Consumer Reports did, where they tested taxis in NYC.Some had the oil changed at 3K miles, some had it at like 10K miles, and some never had it changed. After 100K miles, they tore down the engines, and found NO DIFFERENCE at all in engine wear.
GM packs the engineering into the car, when that d.i.c. says change oil soon i make my appointment 116.00 dollars.I know its a lotta money for an oil change but I like to show off a little when I tell people that.
I change mine somewhere around 0-10% on the DIC. I change it at least twice a year just going by that. It has about 40% left on it right now, but it has been sitting for 6 months so I'm changing it when I get back.

Very interesting about the Daimler oil life monitor.
GM spent big $$ developing their software on oil life so I listen to them.
My DIC tells me when to change oil.
3000 mjile oil changes are absolutely a crazy waste of money with the new cleaner running engines. The engines run leaner therefore much cleaner and so the oil stays better longer.
I change my vette at 10% on the DIC. I change the wifes Lexus at the reccommended change interval, likewise with my new 07 Ranger.
I had a 97 Z-28 for 7 years and 88k. I changed it every 5k. It ran like a bat out of hell, it got super great mpg, and it did not use oil between changes.
I use nothing but MOBIL 1 oil/filters. I change my oil/filter by the oil life monitors, usually by no more than 10% oil life remaining on our daily drivers. That equates to 5,000 to 6,500 miles depending on the vehicle.
While I understand the reason GM probably used one year as a standard (so the owner gets into a responsible PM routine), I change the oil in my Z16 when I want to...that may be one year or one and half years because of the varying miles I may get to drive it. My annual mileage is no more than 2,000 miles (or less) on the Z16...depending on our schedule and weather.
I'd like to see an oil analysis of quality synthetic oil/filter after more than one year of use with less than 5,000 miles.
I might do that myself just to negate the one year "requirement"...

I am sorry, I cant agree with you. 10k on just the oil is fine and I see nothing wrong with it, but ask yourself how long your oil filter will last. My worry is always about the oil filter and no test really show how long a oil filter is good for.
I dont see it as throwing away prefectly good oil and money... more like investing in the product I have.

I'm with you on that one year "requirement." Seems arbitrary considering we're told to "trust the OLM." Not that I would let it go a lot of years, but I don't see the harm in going maybe up to two years on a non-DD as long as the OLM wasn't anywhere near 0%. Like you, I think GM still has in place that one year "requirement" to get owners into responsible PM routines, despite dropping the 3,000 miles "requirement."
