I now pray that Scott's death will have positive consequences. It seems to always take a death of a famous prominent sports figure to up the ante, so to speak, for safety innovation. I hope that NHRA will look into the shutdown lanes & finally figure that a sand pit is not going to stop a 300mph land rocket. This safety technology hasn't changed in 50+ years.
I personally would like to see catch nets (several in rows) like on a aircraft carrier to slow these cars down.
NHRA, Please do not let this death go for no reason.
I still can not believe that another racer has died and it's Scott Kalitta! We are talking major safety pro team, every precausion taken. For me its like all the wind is out of my lungs and I can't breathe....
...
I was going to stop here but something has to be done .I realize that so many racers say they would not give up the sport , no matter what. I don't know what but racing is not worth lives. John Force racing has made major headway to increase the safety percentage , but we now have women in the pro ranks; you have Angelle , Karen Stoffer and the black girl ( who's name I can't recall but is a real kick) doing 6 second 190 plus mph passes on a bike. Holy S**t
Melaine Troxel, Hillary Will and Ashley . 300 to 330 mph . It makes me nervous
evertime one of them girls gets on the line. Is it the protecting father instinct in me? When you forget or put the possibilites out of your mind for one minute in this sport this is what happens.
When I first saw the video, I didn't think that much of the explosion, as it happens periodically, and then the car stops and the driver gets out, thanks to the NHRA safety rules and also the Safety Safari.
I've met Scott several times over the years while covering the Southern Nationals, and my heart goes out to his family. While not perfect, his dad is the stuff of legends, and they are part of the reason NHRA Drag Racing became so popular. We'll miss you Scott.
By the way, the Pro Stock bike racer you mentioned you could not remember her name is Peggy Llewellyn. Here is a link to one of her items on the NHRA website. http://www.nhra.com/content/team_rep...3467&zoneid=86

Certainly tragic, I can't see how anyone could have survived such an accident. Prayers go out to his Wife and Sons and you can only imagine how his Father must feel (I watched him run back in the stone age). Somewhere far in the back of every racer's mind must be what might happen. Courageous or crazy it truly sad to see someone pay the ultimate price to the sport they love and in this case born to. I had to laugh last week when I heard so many people crying about poor Tiger's knee surgery.
