Default Donaldson Vs. Tric

Hi all-

Two questiions-

1. I'm tempted to switch from the Donaldson to the Tric. Is the HP difference worth the $$$?

2. Those who have the Blackwing, do you also have the cover? Any advantages?

Thanks-

Pio-

I have a Donaldson in my 2001 Z06 with no cold air cover or cutting of the shroud. I studied the Z06 open air intakes and from what I can see there really is no advantage to cutting the shrould with all the cold air going into the engine compartment. I also used a hood seal to help prevent and rain or wash water from wetting the Donaldson. I'm very happy with the Donaldson. I had a Vortex on my 1999 coupe and was always fearfull of water ingestion. Virtually every time out in the rain, the clear cover of the Vortex was wet on the inside!
I can't tell you the difference you would experience between the Halltech TRIC and the Donaldson. The price difference is huge.

Pio I have the Donaldson Blackwing without cutting of the shroud.I went this route because as you know when it rains here in Miami it RAINS.The Tric is a real nice unit but to me the few extra ponies was not worth it.

Thanks guys-

I didn't cut the shroud for the Donaldson, I do have the cover, I just don't know if it helps (by directing and keeping the air in) or hurts by not having the full element exposed. Also have the hood seal.

Had the Vortex on my old 98 Coupe, it rocked! Dropped 3/10's with it in the 1/4, but, didn't want to risk it here in Miami.

Is the Tric really worth a couple of HP? I know that Halltech has the "Sidewinder" that doesn't need to have the shroud cut open. Any hp difference between the 2?

Thanks,

Pio

I have a Hall Tech Sidewinder, T1 or whatever it's being called this week on my Z06, I have had a Donaldson on one of my 2000 convertibles, I also had a Vortex on the other, I am very happy with the Sidewinder, great performance good fit and finish, I do not think you will see much if any difference in performance between the Sidewinder and the Donaldson except on the dyno, there maybe 5 hp or slightly less.

I currently have the Donaldson with the cover and the shroud cut. I previously had the Halltech TRIC until I hydro-locked during a rain storm. That is not fun! Take it from me!

Although the Halltech may give you a few extra ponies, for me, the risk was too great with a modified engine (MMS 385 Stroker) and a lowered car (about an inch or so). The Donaldson gives me a few extra inches. Now I really need to be underwater before I hydro-lock again. I had the Sidewinder for a bit but, for me, I found that the Donaldson was superior for my purposes.

A factory '02 air box might be something to consider for those that haven't made any change. More breather holes! :D

Hey Phantom1000, did you have a Haltech Sidwinder when you hydro locked? Was there any other mod to the shrouds or was it stock? I can't see how water could get in. I just got a Sidwinder and I am worried about the spring and summer rainy season here in Florida.

Did not have the Sidewinder when I hydro-locked. I had the through-the-shroud model. Probably pretty safe unless you get submerged (in which case I doubt whether the stock air box would protect you). Try to avoid driving through any hurricanes.
