Default Timing belt?!

Does the C5 have a timing belt? If so at what mileage does it have to be changed?

It has a chain. most people replace them when they do a cam swap. I dont think there is a general rule of thumb for replacement though. I would have changed at 50K but thats just me. Along with fuel filter, injector cleaning, oil pump. Thats not a magic number, just one that works for me.

Most American V-8s have used timing chains for the past 50 or so years. You don't have to change them. I have a friend who has over 350k miles on his 95 Dodge pickup and the motor has never been apart. I have put well over 150k miles on many of my Chevy, Ford and Dodge trucks and never replaced a timing chain.

you do it with a cam swap because it right there and you might as well put in a stronger chain, but I don't see any point in opening up the engine just for the chain.

Thanks for all the input guys.

I guess I’m so use to Japanese cars, that have timing belts.

Timing belts are used on engines with overhead cams...usually. They need to be changed regularly as any belt does. Corvettes don't have overhead cams. (sometimes I wish they did though)

The lack of a belt is great. It is nice not to have major known failure point just waiting to bounce your valves off your pistons.

The '99 that I gave away to my son, has the original timing chain and gears within it even now @315K miles. I bought a new gear and chain set for it but never installed it and need to send it to him.
