Default Water in Hatch area

Guys,
Just bought my first vette 2 weeks ago. A 1999 hatchback.

Because it is new, I have been driving it everywhere, all the time. Well yesterday we had a bit of rain in SE Michigan and I decided to go to the driving range. As I popped the rear of the car to put my clubs in, water rolled down the hatch and into the rear of the car directly onto my rear speakers.

Is this always like this, is there a fix? Or do I not just open the back when it's raining?

Thanks.

My 98 does that too. It's usually just a few drops though.

Welcome to owning a C5. Its just a flaw in the cars design.

The original weatherstripe is bad problem. There is a upgrade that can be installed that will extend the hatch weatherstripe into the lower drain when opened.

I remember the first time that happened to me, I thought, "well there goes the BOSE sound system." I now carry a squeegee behind the driver's seat just to wipe away all excess water before i open it.

I carry a california water blade with me.
Just remove the water on the hatch before opening.

Have a good one

Yep, I knew someone was going to tell me to not drive it in the rain.

Sorry, for me the only thing off limits is going to be snow and salt

Get the later C5 weather strip. As mentioned above, it has a piece that direct the water away from the cargo area. 02 or later

I have an 02 with the extended weatherstripping and if there is much water on the hatch when you open it, it still runs onto the speakers.

It does channel all of the residual water into the lower drain areas but it's better to remove most of the water first when opening to avoid that first deluge.
