Default traction control

Hey newbie here just bought a 1999 with 6 speed. When I corner the vehicle agressive but not to the point of losing traction it cuts back power to nothing. The display says traction control active. It started doing the same driving straight with just mild acceleration? It cuts power all way out when i switch traction control off it rests? Any ideas? Thanks

check your tire size compared to the stock size. If there is too much differance it causes the TC to engage

More important than the wheel size - what size are the tires front and back?

The traction control system will activate if the rear wheels are found to be spinning faster than the front wheels. Obviously - if you lose traction on the rear wheels on either a slippery surface, or you apply too much throttle to cause wheel spin, the traction control system will activate.

But if the rear tires are either equal or shorter than the front tires, the system will detect the rear wheels spinning faster than the fronts and will activate T/C.

This is how the T/C system works - it compares the rate of spin front vs. back, and if the back is spinning faster than the front it will apply brake to the faster spinning wheels.

The 285-20x20 in back is 24.49 overall diameter and the 245-35x20 in the front is 26.75 overall diameter, meaning the back tires are almost 1.75" shorter than the front.

That's your problem. You need a taller tire in back than the front. The only way around this is to change the tires.

Here's a handy tire calculator to help you out....

I'd like to see how she sits with those tire dimensions! It would almost have reverse rake!

Blacksedan87 nailed it. I do want to see pics of this car with these wheels/tires though.

To the OP: Did you just buy them? Or buy the car with them already on there?

they are 285 30 20 in rear and 245 35 20 in front.I bought the vehicle with them already on them. The traction control is saying service traction control so I guess its something else?the overall diameter is .02 larger in front dont know why somebody did this but drives ok.I will be looking to replace them as soon as I can find other rims.Rides fine now

Whoever put those wheels/tires on F'd up. Better off selling them and getting some proper sized wheels. Depending on your budget you can get the stock 17/18 or 19/20 combo. The tires are what geeked up the offset though... theres a couple guys on here running 20/20.

You can post a picture through a third party link/upload site like photobucket.com

Jake is right - I'd sell the wheels, or at least the fronts if you can find a 19" front, get the proper sized tires and you should be good to go. If you want to PM me for help, feel free to do so. I can help you choose the right sized tires if the whole thing confuses you.

Press and hold your traction control button for about 5 seconds after "traction control off" displays,,,,then you'll get "Competitive Driving" display. This will let you spin the tires while keeping the stability controle feature.

No - competitive driving mode is a function of Active Handling, (RPO JL4) and did not become available until mid-year 1998.

replaced plugs and wires cleaned the grounds.I am not throwing codes and am driving with traction control in regular mode! No more issues under hard cornering or acceleration. The tires were not the problem.Works fine with 20s front and rear.
